2021 Offseason

Recommended Posts

Figured it’s best to start a new thread with the off-season moves starting to happen and the league year beginning in less than 2 weeks.

Yesterday Trufant was cut.  Today the Lions restructured Collins deal.  Lions could also restructure Goffs deal when he arrives which would open up a good amount of cap space.

Biggest question mark between now and March 17th is if the lions apply the franchise tag to Golladay, which is what I fully expect.

Lions parted ways with their VP of Player Personnel Kyle O'Brien yesterday. O'Brien was Quinn's right-hand person in the front office. Another personnel guy Jimmy Raye was also let go.

Mike Disner is still there and has a prominent role. I would rather just evaluate who is there and not based on whether they are holdovers.

I'm not upset that any of the Mayhew or Quinn era people remain because the main and primary decision makers are all new. The ones making the moves and guiding the draft are all brand new.

The only way it made any sense for Kenny to turn down that kind of money down is if he absolutely doesn’t want to play longterm for the Lions.

I guess it would also be possible that his agents felt that they needed to get it $20M a season to match Amari Cooper and Keenan Allen but the that seems like a big risk for a small gain.

What's the downside of using Transition instead of Franchise Tag...?

I think they would want to use that on Okwara but I guess they could franchise Okwara.

Jones is an extra special Quinn mistake.  He not only signed him as an FA, he gave him an extension a year and a half later.

I don’t think they should let Kenny walk.   Franchise him and see what happens this year.

How much of a barring does Goff being their long term starting QB have on whether or not Golladay gets tagged?

I don't want Goff here long term as the starting QB and I want to rebuild with a rookie QB, on a rookie contract. If we draft a rookie QB this year (which I would do) I think it makes sense to bring back Golladay. Assuming he stays healthy, he should have a good 4-5 productive seasons ahead of him and he could be an asset for the rookie QB. I don't want Golladay to be an asset for Goff long term because I'd rather build around someone else. That said, if Holmes and Co. are really sold on building around Goff, than Golladay should be brought back.

I can’t figure how this makes sense.   Goff is going to have no one to throw too.  They almost have to draft a WR at 7.

I think they'd rather take the comp pick and cap space than tag him and kick the can down the road another year when he wasn't likely in the long term plans anyway.

I think they were likely taking a receiver at 7 no matter what so I don't think this changes things in that respect. Even if they don't take a receiver with the 1st pick, it's a deep receiver class so they could still get a high level guy in the 2nd if they decide to go elsewhere with the 1st pick.

I get the sense they feel Golladay doesn't want to be here and quit on the team last year. Do they at least get a comp pick?

The comp pick will depend on how much Golladay signs for (somebody will give him big money) and how active or inactive the Lions will be in free agency, I'd lean towards inactive. Jones could also land the Lions a comp pick, I think.

Yeah - that could be the fear. Only the people in Allen Park really know what was going on with him last season (if there are any left that do anyway!). What would be worse than a guy you have to pay $18mil to who you believe isn't going to play hard for you?

If this means we get a new QB this year or next I am fine with it. I don't hate Goff, but I'd rather build around a rookie QB with a rookie contract. Short of them making a splash signing a WR, this could mean their offense takes a step back next year, which sets them up nicely for a top 5 pick and any QB they want.
