Where does Emoni Bates rank among prospects in recent memory?

Sam Vecenie, NBA Draft analyst: I've been a bit lower on the Emoni hype train than most. He's a great prospect, a very clear elite-level, one-and-done prospect. He's incredibly polished as a scorer for his age. But he hasn't really gotten drastically better over the last year, in large part because he hasn't had any offensive accountability in terms of learning how to effectively and efficiently get his shot. Everything is reliant on the pull-up game right now, and he shot 26 percent from 3 in high school last year in large part due to shot selection. The entire show at Ypsi Prep revolves around him, and I think it's actually been a detriment to his development. Or at the very least, to the way he chooses to play the game right now.

When he was a freshman, I would have told you that Bates was probably the top scoring prospect for his age I'd seen. But honestly, I think even someone like Michael Porter Jr., in his final year in Missouri before transferring to Nathan Hale in Seattle for his senior season, had a more effective junior year. And Porter was considered an average No. 1 overall recruit (in the years surrounding him, guys like Andrew Wiggins, RJ Barrett and Ben Simmons were more hyped. Heck, Marvin Bagley was a late reclassification and actually jumped Porter in the consensus rankings).

Throw in that Bates was measured in 2019 at Nike Skills Academy with a 6-foot-9 wingspan at 6-foot-8.5 in terms of height, and there are some real physical dimensions issues that just don't allow him to be in the Kevin Durant class of prospects. I don't really have Bates in that top tier of recent prospects. And by the way, that's totally OK! We don't need to hype these kids and create unreasonable expectations. Bates is still going to have a very long career in the NBA, and I still think he has All-Star upside.

Not related.  But seeing that name on the jersey would trigger me for sure.

There will need to be some rule changes for him to play pro.  At least in the US.

I suppose he could also wait until next January to join the G-League.

I'll be curious to see how he does in the G League.  He'll probably get a chance in the NBA at some point but I think his career will be very underwhelming.

He chose Virginia?  Shouldn't he wait to get into high school (let alone through it) before making that choice?

bates was never going to michigan state.  he made his announcement on the day his dad started that fake high school team.  it was all a publicity stunt.

if he goes to college, it will be to whatever team gives his dad a job.  most likely he goes to the g league so he can get paid.

id be more worried about the stories that his star is dropping because he isnt developing anymore...

The kid will probably be a good player but still disappointing because of the impossible hype he had.

These guys would be 2022.

I wonder if AI gives some money management tips to the kids.  He still has some of my favorite stories when it comes to mismanaged fortunes.
