Lions and Stafford Agree To Part Ways

Recommended Posts

I don't see the Titans, Tannehill has been really good for them and they just gave him a huge contract so I don't see why they would move on from him.   I agree about the others though,  I think the Raiders are a real sleeper.

I just saw an article saying the Colts owner is really trying to get Luck out of retirement but would "settle" for Stafford.  That's the headline atleast, it's behind a paywall so I couldn't read it.

Pioli thinks a deal will get done before the Super Bowl. This is interesting since he did interview for the Lions GM position.

I think I read no trades can be finalized until the start of the new NFL business year, sometime in March.

Correct. It can however be agreed upon though and released to media.

I wonder if that early deal-making benefits the Lions or could even hurt them though. Is it not out of the picture for Brady to retire, or another QB to surprise everyone in February with a retirement or get a freak injury and add more suitors to the pile?

bird in the hand....

If you get a pretty good deal you just pull the trigger, you don't sit around and hope for a random thing to pop up that might make it just a bit better. And just how much better is it gonna get you think Tampa which is picking 32 is gonna give up 3 first round picks? They are gonna be behind the other teams anyway because they have the last pic in the first.

Agree, plus the Lions will know what the offers are going to be when they make their call.

That's my sleeper team for many reasons. First, Jerruh loves to make splashes and I'm sure would love to bring the Texas born boy home, Stafford makes a little more than half of what Prescott is demanding so they could trade for Stafford and have extra cap space to fill other needs and, did I mention that Jerruh loves to make splashes?

Not sure if this is a reliable source but SF the front runner. No word on if a 49er colored cake was purchased by Kelly. Just wait until Kelly realizes California is more restrictive than Michigan.

Whose interest is being served here? Is Detroit trying to squeeze another suitor? Or is it just a SF second-tier front office staff member fluffing the press?

Detroit trying to squeeze more picks.

No team picking higher than SF is a realistic option. Denver is kinda of a pipe dream. So by getting it out there your basically telling teams like the Colts they are offering us pick 12. You only have 21 so if you want to jump them better through in some future 1/2s as well.

Might as well kick the tires and offer up Stafford and some picks.

I would love that assuming Watson would be cool coming here.

The Jets were on his list so I assume he doesn't mind not winning right away. It was said he loved Saleh, maybe looking at what the Lions assembled could woo him?

The Lions have pieces on offense they can convince him with. Holmes, Dorsey and Campbell can sit down with Watson and convince them these are not the same old Lions that drove away Stafford. The Rams had a history of trading 1st rounders and finding talent in later rounds. Maybe offer up Stafford and a pair of 1's? Or trade Stafford to the Colts and package some picks for Watson.

I would also find it hilarious if Miami trades back Houston's 1st round pick for Watson essentially trading Tunesil for Watson.

He's not coming here.  He wants Miami and he'll get Miami.  Doesn't he already have a home there?    If the Fins can't swing it, it would likely be New  York (Jets)  or Las Vegas.

It also doesn't sound like Houston is ready to trade him. They may force him to sit out the season.

That would be a shame, but I wouldn't bet against him doing it. It would likely only drive down his market value too (albeit not by a lot).
