Bevell as OC: Do you want him back?

Shamelessly stealing this from POD: https://www.prideofdetroit.com/2021/1/18/22236484/monday-open-thread-will-darrell-bevell-return-as-offensive-coordinator

Assuming that Dan Campbell is the next HC, what do you think about retaining Bevell as OC?  Now, I certainly hope that this will be Campbell's decision and this isn't forced on him by higher ups, but assuming that Campbell and Bevell hit if off, would you LIKE to see Bevell back or would you prefer to move on to someone new?

I can see some advantages to Bevell staying: Obviously he's got experience with the current players in Detroit and the offense did seem to improve once Patricia was gone.  It might be nice for a rookie HC to have some hold over to help ease the transition.

On the other hand, having a guy who was a hold over from the past regime and who acted as the intern HC might cause some resistance if Campbell tries to put his mark on the offense and it differs from Bevell.  With many of the players talking about that "breathe of fresh air" that came with Bevell, if there are any struggles initially the players might side with the known OC who gave them a spark of life vs. an new HC.

I think it depends what you do with Stafford. If you keep him and plan on his being starting QB next year while possibly developing a young piece under him [my preference] I think it's a good idea to keep Bevell for the continuity piece. If you plan on trading Matt, scrapping the whole thing, and starting anew though with either a vet on a one-year deal [my 2nd choice] or a guy fresh out of school [my least favorite choice], I don't know that that continuity matters as much.

This is presuming DB would want to return, he may not after coming close but not getting the job himself.

I want Stafford back, unless his back is about to explode.

Assuming Stafford returns, I want Bevell back. He proved to me that the team responds to him and Stafford was productive under him.

Again, how much can we hope to improve by trying to upgrade from what Bevell and Stafford showed us at the end of the season?

you can ask a GM to take a role where he doesn't hire the coach, you probably can't hire a coach and tell him who his coordinators are going to be - so Bevell (and maybe Stafford) will have to persuade Campbell - if he gives him the chance and Bevell even wants to stay.

If this team can get a first and a second for Stafford - do it - and you don't need to take a QB this year.     There are a number of get-by QBs you can sign for a year.  They are going to suck next year too and maybe they'll pick in the Top 5 and take a QB then.   I say build the bulk of the team over a couple or 3 years and THEN you get your QB in the draft and you plug a cheap, young QB into a good team.   The Anti-Jets, who will probably ruin Justin Fields just like they'll ruin Robert Saleh.

If they trade Stafford, then they have to take a QB. That's really where the talent is in this draft, with the receivers, and lber's and a few others. This is a great year for QB's.

And, with the coaches they've been talking to for OC, they might want a multi-dimensional QB like Lance. I don't agree with that direction.

Lance is staring to become my favorite QB in this draft not named Lawrence.   The other guys all have question marks surrounding injuries and it seems to almost always come back to bite the Lions when they ignore the injury history and draft a guy.    I’m not sure Lance is going to be ready to jump in right away so may be a perfect opportunity to draft and stash and let Stafford have one more year.

This is where I am at as well. Lance is my favorite QB outside of Lawrence at this point. I like Fields too, but given Lance's added mobility and elusiveness, I would go him over Fields at this point if both were available. I'm in the trade Stafford camp, but if he came back for a season and allowed Lance to sit, watch, and learn I'd be fine with that.

Trading Stafford and spending the 7th overall pick on a QB with only one season at a Division I school. That does seem Lionesque.

There will be a number of options of veteran QB’s they could bring in to start for a year if they traded Stafford and drafted a project QB like Lance.

Yes. This 100%. Even two years of Stafford with Lance in waiting would not be bad. Depth chart of Stafford/Daniel/Lance next year and Stafford/Lance the following. Plug Lance into the rebuilt team he watched come together in 2023.
