this was the potential down side of firing Patricia now. You want a better coach and a better draft. So you fire Quinn and let Patricia play out the string (what I would have done anyway....).  Mahomes was 10th pick? They still better get at least that far down the draft order!

But if he can lead this team to wins against the Packers, Titans, Bucs, and Vikings wouldn’t that automatically make him a better coach?  Like a significantly better coach?  Imagine what the defense and offense would have to do to beat both the Titans and Bucs.  So who cares if he beats the Bears?  That’s not going to decide anything.  If the Lions finish 5-0 and make the playoffs after beating 3 likely playoff teams then they must have had a terrific turn around.  They must have found a way to get the most out of objectively bad defensive players and gotten the most out of their underperforming offense.  What more could you ask for in a head coach?

If they win a playoff game?  Jesus.  It would be like complaining about Stafford after he carries the team through another season.

Rasputin, coaxing a win out of a team to save his job like Fontes.

I rewatched recently one of the 1989 games with Bob Gagliano at QB (loss of course).  That guy was fast and the Mouse Davis offense was peculiar and interesting to watch (particularly with Barry).  QB under center, with all the wide outs.

i think we should give bevell a little credit for this win.  the lions came out pretty pumped in the second half.  they didnt quit.  i mean, they arent very good and they got lucky, but they were definitely trying hard.  they blitzed more.  they threw more.  they took some chances.  things you didnt see with patricia.

And just to double-down, if you actually believe that a meaningless win like this one is going to get Bevell the head coaching job then why would you think the same people who you fear will give him the job are going to hire the right GM if he loses?  I mean pick your poison and then be consistent.  If you think a few wins will actually get Bevell the job then just you might as well just give up on the Lions entirely because he isn’t going to get enough wins and that just means this leadership will definitely hire the wrong GM.

This was a case of a terrible team handing a win to another terrible team, the Lions weren't even trying to win this game before the Bears started tanking possessions late, the Lions punted down by 10 deep in their own territory with about 6 minutes left.

The win doesn't mean anything (outside of really hurting the tank and making the players happy) and Bevell is almost certainly not keeping his job even if they win out so I wouldn't put any stock into a game like this outside of it hurting draft position. The only difference I saw was that they blitzed more in the second half. Otherwise, please put an end to this season already.

I don't know why people love to play contrarian. To be annoying I guess.

Pointing out that a game hurt draft position doesn't mean rooting for team to lose. The game hurting draft position is a fact. I'm indifferent to the rest of this season, already looking forward to next season and beyond. I wanted to see Quinntricia fired and that mission was accomplished.

No doubt to find a coach that good is worth more than one 1st round pick. Now, do we think there is a chance in any universe that Bevel is that guy?!?

Fair enough. My position has always been to root for the Lions to win regardless of their draft position.

I have no problem with that stance but not everybody shares that same mentality and that should be ok too.

With that said, I'm sure the team feels good about the win after a tumultuous couple of weeks (years really) so good for them.

I highly doubt it.  Since we all seem to agree doesn’t that make the hand-wringing a little pointless?

Again you can’t on one hand think ownership will keep this coach if he wins a couple of games but then think they will pick the right GM and coach and thus draft the right players if he loses.  Either they are incompetent or not.  Either they will pick the right people or not.  If it’s luck then maybe winning is the luck they need.  If it’s competence then they will make the right choices regardless of the last 5 games.

This team needs high-level talent because it is almost totally devoid of it on both sides of the ball. On offense we have Golladay and Stafford (when he's playing on point). Swift and Hockenson could potentially develop into a high-end talents, but we don't know yet. On defense they have zero top level players. Maybe Jeff Okudah becomes one.

The best way to acquire game changing, top-level players is through the draft. The higher you are drafting, the greater the chance you have at getting a top talent. If the Lions want a player like Trey Lance or Luke Wilson or Jamar Chase, odds are obviously better that we could get them at a higher draft pick. Having the best odds to get a top talent is why I root for losing.

Good for Darrell Bevell. His first win as a head coach. He may never get another one but nobody will ever take that away from him.

The Lions scored five touchdowns today. Without their best WR and best RB. That’s another good for Darrell Bevell. I didn’t get to watch the whole game, but the offense seemed to be using a lot more of the field than was the case under Patricia.

The defense is still hot garbage, but we discovered something: if you can force another team to drop back, you can get a strip sack.

I don’t expect the team to win another game, but I hope they do. They deserve to have some fun after playing for Patricia. And if you root for them to lose, you’re worse than Ebenezer Scrooge.

Give this offense Swift and Golliday now...  The D is still a train wreck but if the offense is making Stafford's arm talent the center of the offense we could have something.

Did i say train wreck?  I meant..the D, the very thing that the previous coach was brought in to showcase, was and is the flaming bag of dog doo that someone leaves on a door step on Devil's Night.

Why worry it gets Bevel an extension?  Just let them rebuild their pride a bit.

Pride of whom? Pride of a bunch of players that the next GM is just going to come in and cut/not resign/trade? I have a feeling that 50-60% or more of the players currently on the roster won't be here in 2 years once the next GM is here and putting their plan in place. Darrell Bevell and most or all of our coaching staff might well not be here either. I want a better draft pick over some meaningless prideful victory for players and coaches who won't be here in 2 years.

This is obviously hypothetical, but if we had the chance to draft Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields (and I get that we didn't even before today's win) and we won our way out of the ability to draft one of them, I feel a lot more people would be pissed about a meaningless late season win.

I compare this win to the late season rally the Lions went on in 2010. They won the last three games of season and went from being able to draft Patrick Peterson 5th overall to ending up 13th and getting Nick Fairley instead. Over the past 8-9 years of his career, I'd take Patrick Peterson over any of the three wins we had at the end of 2010.
