I know some people were lukewarm on Rick Smith, but that team fell into chaos after he left. He may be a better GM than we give him credit for.

When McNair chose BoB over Smith, he doomed that franchise for the road it's taken.

I just think he's the Caldwell of GMs. Good for 9-7 and a playoff appearance, just not much else. I'd rather take a chance on someone new, and sure it might be Quinn part Deux, but they also have a ceiling. I'm not sure Smith gets you to a Superbowl

Reports are the Lions are hiring Randle El as WR coach.  I was hoping for him or Hines Ward so this is another good get in my eyes.

Overall I really like this coaching staff.

The problem is our current staff could beat our current our players in a game

Yes,  JJ Watt is leaving the Texas (the new Lions).   You can forget about it...........he is going to a contender.  I'd bet the Steelers, Packers or Chiefs..........he wants to win a ring.

Lions are going to surprise people next year.  If they draft a WR I see no reason they couldn’t compete for a playoff spot.  Golladay/Swift/Smith would be a heck of a foundation. OL is actually not a weakness currently, need to shore up the right side.

And the biggest reason for optimism, it is impossible for the defense to be worse.  They will improve, they will be coached up.  Lions will be tough to beat.

The defense was of course horrid because of coaching and they likely couldn't be coached any worse next year. But this defense has almost zero pass rush and assuming they lose Romeo Okwara, zero capable pass rushers. If you can't get pressure on the QB or get a sack everything breaks down from there. Beyond that they have no one that can cover in space, LBs, Safety or CB. They routinely get burnt big in coverage not only because they generate no QB pressure and leave the QB a clean pocket with all day to throw the ball, but because they legit have defenders who lack coverage skills, field vison, lateral quickness, etc. They are also one of the slowest, most unathletic units in the league. Speed and athleticism are things that can't be coached up and when you look at guys like Danny Shelton, Nick Williams, Jamie Collins, Jalanhi Tevai, an aging Desmond Trufant, Tracy Walker they lack those things.

This defense is 2-3 seasons from being good because they need to revamp the front 4, acquire at least 2 capable pass rushers assuming Okwara walks, get defensive tackles who can stop the run, find a coverage LB who can work in space, hope Okudah and Oruwariye develop into capable coverage corners, find Safety's who can cover and step up in the box to make tackles. Speed and athleticism are things they don't have right now across the board defensively and they need to acquire guys who can keep up with the speed at which the NFL game is being played. They need to do all of this, all the while implementing a brand new scheme, assuming they switch to a 4-3 base scheme.

I have a hard time figuring all the mock drafts that have the Lions either still taking a QB or Devonta Smith - I think if they don't make 4 of their first 5 picks on the D they are crazy.

Always, always stick to your board. However, the board is ranked in order of value to YOUR team. If you feel you don't need a tight end, for example, tight ends will be adjusted in ranking to reflect that.

I think sticking to your board is key so as long as your board adjusts for the positional value of a player. If I can draft the 2nd best pass rusher or the best TE in the draft I'm more likely to opt for the one that has greater positional value, pass rusher. The problem for the Lions is they've gotten too cute in the past and thought they were smarter than the rest. Taking Bradon Pettigrew over an Alex Mack, Eric Ebron over Aaron Donald or OBJ, TJ Hockenson over Brian Burns/Devin Bush/Montez Sweat.

This is a horrible draft for defensive high-end talent. Parsons is an off ball linebacker with a very questionable character issue.

The next highest guys are corners who don't grade as high as Okudah. The value is OT, QB, and WR at the top.

Maybe Dan Campbell can get Watt to join the Lions coaching staff.

I'm not as confident as you are, but in the NFL, where you only play 16 games and a handful every year are decided by a possession or less, I don't think 8-8 is out of the question. I do think somewhere between 3-13 and 6-10 is more likely though. I think though the defense almost has to take something of a step forward (their backs are against the wall), but the offense could very well take a step back without Stafford.

Yes, what is the difference between having a defense that last year was historically bad, and having a defense that is just ordinary bad?

And what is the difference between having an offense that will have a massive downgrade at QB, but that will not have the shackles placed on it that were in place for the first 11 games last season?

I don't think next year's team will be good, but they will play together and have a better record than last year, by a game or two.

all things being equal I would take the best players also, but they are not equal with the lions, and the large uncertainty about the precise relative ranking of any and all draft picks is much much larger than the known certainty that the lions are desperately more deficient of defensive talent than offensive talent.

It's value to the particular club, not an overall ranking of talent, and they all have a complex, proprietary formula that includes every possible factor. The main problem is the same with any draft, you are drafting humans who all develop and respond and get injured in sometimes unpredictable ways.
