how do you take holmes over dodds?  or even dimitroff?

they said they wanted experience.

watch them hire holmes and then go for marvin lewis because of his experience.

Holmes has been with the Rams for 18 years and in the scouting department for almost all of them so he has experience. The Rams have had 25 pro bowlers in that time. Colbert, for example, has had 30. Holmes probably isn't my first choice. Obviously it would be Colbert, but then probably Dodds and maybe Dimitroff. I don't think he would be a bad hire. He's a finalist for other jobs so it's not like only the Lions want him. There still may be second interviews with Dodds.

How is it same old Lions? Same old Lions kept Russ Thomas for like 20 years. Same old Lions kept Millen around way longer than they should have and just promoted his assistant.

Holmes ran the Rams last 8 drafts according to Doug Karsch on 97.1. They haven't had a 1st round pick in the last 4 drafts and still manage to get more starters than most teams, including us, out of those drafts. I'd be satisfied with Holmes, though I'd prefer Dodds.

Paton gone, Saleh likely gone. This is part of the problem with waiting too long. I like that they are being thorough but the time for urgency is near.

It seems likely that it will be the Holmes/Lewis duo. Not really a fan especially Lewis but hope for the best.

I don't think the Lions were ever as high as fans on Saleh. I don't think they missed out Saleh because they waited to long, it looks like they missed out because they didn't want him.

Judging by the tweet I posted above, it sounds like Paton was never an option.

yeah, but they wanted gm experience.

he's never been a gm.

that's like saying they wanted head coaching experience so they hired a guy who has been special teams coach for 18 years.

Dimitroff has a lot of misses in recent times and that defense is really bad. Not too hot on him.

You're right about Lewis likely being connected to Holmes. The rumors are that the Lions want an experienced coach if Holmes is the hire and Lewis (and Bowles) are the only two experienced guys I can think of that they interviewed. If Dodds was the pick, I'd think that Bevell or Campbell would be the coach because of their connection.

If we end up with Holmes or Dodds I will be happy. If we end up with retread Jeff Ireland, who was a car fire in Miami, I will not be happy. Jeff Ireland has not had the success that Thomas Dimitroff has had throughout his career. Ireland was a complete disaster in Miami on a similar scale that Quinn was here. Maybe he's learned his lessons and has grown, but I'm a no thanks on Jeff Ireland and would be really underwhelmed if it was an Ireland/Campbell combo.

at the end of the day, holmes is probably a good hire.  i would have liked dodds or even dimitroff, but holmes could turn out to be better than both.

My problem is the whole one organizaiton thing. That was one of the many problems with Quinn. I'll be disappointed if they draft a guy that's only worked for one team.

They said they wanted an experienced coach OR GM I believe, experience for one or the other but not both. If they bring in Marvin Lewis that fits the bill. Now, I don't want Lewis as the Coach, but we shall see where this goes.

Holmes actually ran the Rams college scouting and draft process per Doug Karsch on 97.1. Look at the amount of talent, without a first round pick in each of the last 4 drafts, the Rams have been able to procure.

OK.

Still with the only one organization right?

Yeah I just hope Holmes doesn't have the habit of his boss and trade his 1st round pick every year.

Yes, only with the Rams. I like Ed Dodds better because he's had proven draft success across multiple organizations, drafting for multiple schemes. I wouldn't complain about Holmes being the choice unless we end up with Marvin Lewis as the Head Coach.

Holmes is also a finalist for the Falcons job. Paton just signed on with Denver so it shows to me the Lions have identified good and quality candidates if other teams value them as well.

Yeah, they've given up a lot of draft capital just to get Jalen Ramsey and Jared Goff. Ramsey is the best at his position in the league and Goff is a competent starter, but that's an awful lot of assets to give up for only two players.

Why is everyone obsessing about Marvin Lewis? Just wait until Holmes hires Jeff Fischer.

I'd actually be ok with Fisher as the head coach given that we are opening new sportsbooks at the Detroit casinos. Just put a big bet down that the Lions will go 7-9 and use the parlay for every year thereafter to keep winning big on that prediction.

I think people are putting too much stock in Sheila's quote about experience. I think she said she prefers it. I don't think it's a requirement. Dan Campbell, who they seem to like, has experience as a head coach for part of a season in Miami.
