Eric Bienimey or Robert Saleh baby! Not that I have a freaking clue if either would do better. I do think the next GM should get to hire who they want, with little or no ownership input.

You don't know who you want. I want either Matt Eberflus (defensive coordinator for the Colts), Jim Leonhard (defensive coordinator for Wisconsin), or Mike Lafleur (passing game coordinator for 49ers).

GM I want either Rick Smith or Louis Riddick, with a strong lean toward Smith.

No. The problem all along has been little or no ownership input. In particular, the problem with Patricia is that they let Quinn hire who he wanted with little or no ownership input.

Since they do not have any football experience in the executive office, they need to ensure they do not allow a mindless conformity to grow in the football operation. They did not do that with Quinn and Patricia.

I hope they add someone with football experience to their executive office, someone on a par with Rod Wood. Then let that person (Tony Dungy?) run the GM search and the coach search.

From Kevin W (@_wags): Why do the #Lions consistently stink? Why can’t they ‘fix’ it? Even with the #NFLs help, they’re bottom-feeders.

Kevin, with another gutting of the franchise on the horizon, I can see why you’d ask this because it certainly doesn’t feel it’s about a single regime—regardless of how you feel about Matt Patricia or Bob Quinn, or Sheila Ford Hamp or Martha Firestone Ford. The fact is, Detroit has picked in the top 5 (8 times) nearly three times as much as they’ve made the playoffs (3) over the last 20 years. At some point, it’s not bad luck anymore.

I think in this case, overall organizational alignment is a baseline element that’s been missing. Part of it is that the team’s ownership is pretty hands-off (which, to be fair, a lot of football people prefer). Part of it is that so much of the business operation is at Ford Field while the football folks are in the suburbs day-to-day. And this manifests without there being a ton of checks and balances over how the football operation is working.

My belief is that, over the years, that’s allowed for problems, wherever they may be, to fester. Again, most football coaches and scouts want relatively hands-off owners. But the truth is that most good owners are at least creating guardrails for the football people, and making sure certain standards are being upheld. Along those lines, I’m not sure the Fords have done enough in Detroit. Maybe new controlling owner Sheila Ford Hamp will be different. She’s got some big decisions coming.

Those coaches would be so uninspiring. Definitely no defensive coordinator.  Has to be a coach with a offensive background.  49ers passing game sucks.

Haven't the Ford's done that since WCF died? They consulted with Ernie Ecorsi before hiring Quinn after interviewing other qualified candidates. People on here complained that Martha was forcing Quinn to keep Caldwell now the complaint is they are too hands off? Quinn came in and had back to back 9-7 seasons and made the playoffs. They allowed him to hire his coach. They made sure certain standards were upheld. Quinn had to make the playoffs. He didn't and was fired. They fired Mayhew only one season removed from an 11 win season. The WCF days of sticking with Millen and Russ Thomas are over.

If I'm GM, I'm gonna want to make my hires without interference from the owner. Let football people make football decisions.

I know it won't be popular because Bevell isn't the hip and trendy flavor of the month coordinator, but I would be willing to give him a shot if the team responds well to him.

**** no.  Absolutely not.  That would be most same ole lions decision of all time.

The Colts and Wisconsin defenses have been very inspiring. Mike Lafleur is also Matt's brother, and sounds like he's very similar.

They consulted with Ernie Accorsi. He collected his check and went home. The Fords let Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee work without adult supervision.

If you are going to have a rookie GM and rookie head coach, you damn well better have a grown up at the executive level supervising them. This is why I said I would like to see them hire (not as a consultant) someone with NFL experience at the executive level, on a par with Rod Wood.

Sorry, dude. You don't manage via abstract rules.

They hired a rookie GM and left him without interference. And they ended up burning Stafford's prime years as a result.

If they somehow hire Ozzie Newsome as GM, yes, BTFO. But if they hire another rookie as GM, they better give him a tight leash.
