2021 MLB Draft (FUBAR for KUMAR)

Recommended Posts

Law had a write up on Henry Davis the C out of Louisville and he sounds really intriguing.  Said he sees alot of Buster Posey in him and thinks he is a better prospect than Joey Bart who went number 2 a few years ago.

I'd prefer to get somebody that could play SS but beggars can't be choosers and we just need the most talent we can get so I'm open to all positions as long as they can rake.

Cody S from the Athletic has a podcast...he indicated that the Tigers are circling Marcelo Mayer and Kumar. It will be hard to turn down Rocker if he's there at 3.

Athletic had a loooooong article on Lawler and mentioned his commitment to Vandy seems real; of course when someone drops a $8M check in your lap, maybe the answer changes

there just are not many above average catchers out there

but if you spend $$ you can find a SS

I don't know if I am taking you out of context, and I don't mean to.

I'm of the opinion they just need to take the best talent available.  Maybe you adjust and slide a middle infielder / center fielder up above a corner.  Maybe you take a starting pitcher over a reliever.  You make priorities like that.  But I don't think they're in a position to choose a player based on a projected possible hole a few years from now.  I know they are banking on the pitching trio and have high hopes for Greene/Torkelson in the lineup.  But I wouldn't bank on that to make draft choices now.  Just get talent.

Good points indeed. Dingler seems like he could play the outfield, first base and be a third catcher while playing every day anyway.

Yeah I want bpa regardless of position,  I know that line about them raking made it sound like I only want a bat but I just meant if they go with a bat as long as they can hit I don't really care where they play.

Talent evaluation in baseball is so sketchy though. You sort of have to decide if your bias on your top pick is going to be pitching or hitting going in because good luck coming up with a metric to tell you if the best pitcher in the draft in a given year is BPA or not compared to the best position player.

Unless Bob Feller is available.

But Willie Mays is available too so...

Now who's your choice?

Probably Feller. While Willie had declared hardship for early access to the draft , he was still a little on the young side for most teams to go beyond doing their due diligence and working him out. Though scouts admitted that the bat was already ML close and the strike zone of a 6 yr old would be doubly tough to pitch to.

Feller was 17 in his rookie year, but he was clearly ready - 15 K in his first start.  Mays was the great athlete with tremendous upside.  Feller would have been #1 if there was such a thing.

Edit: Joe Dimaggio would have been a better choice as he and Feller both started in 1936.

Turning the Corner?

He does make a good point about a possible log jam at 3B, but they could always deal from a strength to address a weakness

Didn’t Mays go hitless in his first dozen at bats in the major? The fans would have probably run him out of town today.

1) Pirates (Callis): Jack Leiter, RHP, Vanderbilt -- It feels like a four-man race to go No. 1 right now, but give me the guy who’s dominating the Southeastern Conference and can pitch off his fastball like few can.

2) Rangers (Mayo): Jordan Lawlar, SS, Jesuit Prep (Texas) -- Callis taking Leiter made this easier as I feel Lawlar’s the next best player in the class right now as a five-tool player at a premium position.

3) Tigers (Callis): Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS (Chula Vista, Calif.) -- I almost went back-to-back Vanderbilt pitchers, but Mayer’s sweet left-handed swing and smooth shortstop play were too much to pass up.

I’m good with almost everyone that is not Rocker.  No evidence, just have a bad feeling he’d be an injury risk.  I like the C, and go get a SS in free agency. I’d be good with the HS SS options, too.

I like Rocker a lot, assuming his FB velocity  dip remains temporary (it was better last start). The Tigers don't really have a modern starter that gets tons of K's. Mize doesn't have a history of getting lots of K's and while Skubal does in the minors, he's seen more as a #3 or #2 starter eventually due to a lack of dominant breaking pitch and command issues (Robbie Ray- type career possibly). I think Manning has the shot at that as well, but Rocker has legitimate frontline starter stuff too. It does sound like there is a good chance that he falls to the Tigers, and I think it would be hard to pass him up. He's dominated the best conference in college for 3 years. I'd be happy with him or one of the prep SS's.

It's a weak year for college position players, unfortunately, with the exception of Henry Davis. Next year should be better in that regard with 3 college MIF prospects that should go in the top 10 (Jace Jung, Carter Young, Brooks Lee).

I am with you.  Rocker will be an overhyped bust.  I can tell by his name.

I wouldn't draft a guy based on breaking ball K results at the college level. If you can justify liking him in the rest of his game - sure, but that part has a high probability of turning to dust against MLB hitters. I want either great command or a great live fastball - preferably both. Not even to consider whether being highly dependent on the slider increases injury risk.

ESPN.com($$$$) on the 3rd pick:

3. Detroit Tigers

Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS (CA), USC commit

Mayer is a fluid defender with advanced feel for contact and above-average power potential in a projectable 6-foot-3 frame. There isn't an outrageous 70-grade tool, but basically everything else is here and you can't rule out one showing up later.

Detroit has been on Mayer heavy, and he's the leading candidate to go third, but the Tigers are known to put enormous weight on SEC performance and love power pitchers, so either of the Vandy arms is still a possibility. They've also been in deep on multiple occasions, including GM Al Avila, to see Brady House.

Lawlar and Henry Davis are the two I want most.   It sounds like Lawlar will be gone but it's not a sure thing.

I know we have Dingler at C so it may seem redundant to take another catcher but assuming both actually do hit their ceiling I think both are capable of playing other positions(Davis has played 3b and Dingler the OF) so you could mix and match them to get both in the lineup on any given night.

Of course I've always been in the bpa camp so I wouldn't care even if they couldn't play other positions but just pointing that out for those that may not have that viewpoint.
