  1. Still blows my mind that this pythagorean thing works so well. I know it's been modified somewhat but even at it's inception (which didn't have any adjustments, it was straight runs) for a quick and dirty analysis at being so close most of the time is remarkable. Math in life. My biggest regret is bailing on Calc II because things stopped coming to me so quickly. I thought about that the other day when I was running. I'm training for a half marathon. I hate running. My wife loves it. I took it up as a means to stay fit and something we can do together as a hobby. The thing you learn from it with my attitude is you never really like it while you are doing it. All I think about is "when can I stop?". Each increase in milage is deemed impossible - until I do it. But that's the point. It's supposed to be hard and grueling. That was my attitude with math when I got to the advanced stages. After failing my very first Algebra class in 9th grade my teacher talked with me and something just clicked. From then on it was A's. Even through calc I, I did pretty well. Then it got very hard and I had to really think about things. I guess I just gave up because I figured if I had to think about it so hard then it must not be my thing. My professor tried to tell me but I was 19 and knew everything. But I felt like i missed out on a large part of my brain's functional ability by giving up on it.

  2. Yeah if we don't get atleast 1 top end prospect for him I'm not trading him. We still have him for 3 more years so no rush to give him away unless you feel like he is ready to implode which I see no signs of that happening. Maybe if he finishes the year strong and shows he could put together a complete season he may command a premium player(s) in the offseason.

  5. Ten years from now after we have won multiple World Series we will remember Jake Rogers call up as the move that turned everything around.

  8. The thing I've always struggled with regarding Bern vs Hill is.... why in the blue **** would the Democrats *not* conspire for the Democrat to win the Democratic nomination? Hey, Democratic party, would you rather have a Democrat as your nominee, or the dude who literally isn't a Democrat until it's convenient? Do you want the person who's been fighting on your side for decades, or the dude who just showed up, and conveniently became a non-Democrat the moment he was done running? I couldn't find the entire thing to be more silly personally.

  9. Defense usually peaks early. After about age 27, it starts to decline. It's why shortstops move to 3B, third basemen move to 1B and centerfielders move to the corners. Jackson's defense decline might have started a bit too soon, but it pretty much falls under the norm, especially if you consider that his 2011 fielding numbers might be a fluke. Someone like Ian Kinsler, who had exceptional defense in his 30s, is the big outlier.

  10. The pro-tanking opinion as expressed around here has "tanked" my enjoyment of MTS. I dont in any way need to see angry fans or anything silly like that....but to see the glib reinforcement of maximizing losses for multiple seasons as some kind of virtue makes me want to eat a copy of Moneyball and throw up.

  11. Speaking of Trout, I think one thing that gets understated with him is just how damn consistent he is. Not just from year to year but month to month. Looking at his monthly splits it's been 2 years since he posted a complete month with an OPS under 1.000. The past 4 seasons his worst month by OPS was like .880. You have to go all the way back to 2015 where he had a sub par month offensively, and that was only 1. Every other month that season he posted an OPS over a 1.000. Yeah I think its safe to say he is pretty good at this baseball thing.

  12. Scott Spiezio. He had a soul patch that he would dye red. Rex Hudler referred to it on air as a “flavor saver.”

  13. After spending quite a bit of the season above their Pythagorean Expectation, the Tigers are now right on it at 30-71. How they got there: March: 2-2 April: 11-12 May: 9-18 June: 5-20 July: 3-19 Every day in every way, they're not getting better and better.

  15. Agree. After the Verlander trade when I finally came to grips that we were going to be terrible for quite some time the silver lining in it for me was that I was atleast going to see Miggy chase down some milestones. I figured he would still be a productive player as long as he was on the field so that would give me some enjoyment out of the team, boy was I wrong about that.

  16. It's not that hard to believe. There are several franchises in the same boat. The Yankees are so far ahead of everybody else that it's not funny. I don't like the prevailing notion that winning the World Series is the only thing that matters. One good thing about the history of the Tigers is that they have had a lot of great players. I would put their all-time all-star team ahead of anybody but the Yankees and they aren't that far behind them. That is why it stinks to see guys like Scherzer and Verlander leave and become stars for other teams. Players like that provide a lot of entertainment and great memories. Teams like the last three years provide almost no entertainment or memories. Tanking year after year in order to get an outside shot at a world championship some day is not something I want to see as a fan. I know that's a minority opinion here.

  20. This is the best part. We still have are best players and this is still happening. How can we root for a team specifically constructed to lose?

  21. At this other forum that I frequent, the "brain trust" there tells me no team intentionally "tanks" because the players want to do well to advance their value for their next contract, so they would not "tank" even if expressly ordered to. Personally I don't believe that "tanking" is that complicated. If the Tigers happen to hold a lead late in the game, just put Joe Jimenez in the game and things will take care of themselves.

  26. Don't get me wrong I am personally not complaining about the heat. I love it. Its more about the guilting of other people. Same holds true on Memorial Day and July 4. There's also those people who feel the need to remind us while having our BBQ the "real reason". Throw in Christmas too. Everyone's well aware despite your internet meme.
