That lake shot is awesome. And I'm always a sucker for rain and clouds.

This is a converted B/W photo I took with my aging camera phone two years ago, then I added a touch of warmth to it for a little additional character. It was shot at a friend’s family property that had been abandoned for 15 years and has only recently become habitable. It might be too warm but I like the moodiness of it.

From May 21, near Sublette, KS. I thought the storm we were on just before this one near Syracuse was Incredible. Then we move south and run into this beast. What a crazy day. I often wonder if @clark1mt is ever out there.

One of the girls woke me up early this morning, so I took advantage and went to play at the beach.

Took a walk down Idaho’s long-abandoned Old State Highway 55 along artificially-created Lake Cascade, an area flooded in a 1948 Bureau of Reclamation project. The highway has been in disuse for 72 years and it looks like it. Although the road itself is rarely submerged, most of the area we walked through today is underwater for at least part of the year. No one seems to come here, and I can see why. It has no recreational lure, it’s often underwater, and the road — if you dare call it that — is gated off, potholed, and full of trees, flowers, and weeds pushing up through fissures in the asphalt. But its majestic solitude is overwhelming.

Taken on a cloudy day at the Idaho Botanical Garden in Boise. So many of the plants and flowers are out right weird. In the original Star Trek there were all sorts of painted backdrops of weird alien flowers that now show up much more clearly in remastered video on a big TV screen. And a lot of them seem to be at my local botanical garden. I thought the artists just made it up. But they were painting stuff they must have seen in gardens in Southern California.

I'm not sure I would have gotten close enough to whatever that is to take that picture!

😱

Looks like the speaker tower in County Stadium.

It’s actually quite benign. It’s blooming tassels on a stalk that from a distance are reminiscent of sparkling cannabis buds. But when you get up close it looks like little suckers that would attach themselves to your face and drink your blood, so I get your hesitancy.

Actually, the botanical garden is on the surrounding grounds of the former 150-year-old Idaho territorial penitentiary and there are guard towers that look exactly like those speaker towers scattered throughout. The building directly behind that fencing is an impregnable stone barn. There are also tall industrial smokestacks reminiscent of the crematoriums at Nazi death camps butting up against long somber stone walls. The place is beautiful and frightening at the same time.

This is the wall of the former prison — shut down after rioting in 1973 — that you walk along on part of the botanical garden. In the garden there’s also a grim, spooky graveyard filled those charged with “infamous crimes against nature“ which includes everything from those executed for child murders to those who died in prison for low level crimes like bestiality and homosexuality that to our eyes now seem unworthy of receiving life sentences.

Was there a record of, 'Le Nozze di Figaro' laying about when you were there?

No, but a tour of the former penitentiary will send ice water flowing through your veins. It’s like a scary dream worthy of eerie music echoing from scratchy gramophones as weird monks in long robes roam the halls looking for victims to punish.

Took a pic of myself and the cat, but I couldn't get it to look good in color, so I tried it out like this.

This isn't great art, but it does show how things look in wildfire country.  The yellow cast is from a sunny day covered by smoke.  The heat caused high winds, which knocked over a nearby oak tree, which then pulled down three telephone poles.  Note the telephone pole stump in the middle, snapped in half by the force of the other poles pulling on the wires.

That, in turn, caused sparks, which ignited the neighbor's field.  Lucky for him, and for me, the fire fighters doused the blaze before it spread.  I am standing on my property, and because of this wind damage I lost power and internet for 4 days.

I don't know how this works, but the sky was red the first day, yellow the second, and just muddy gray after that.  It still is.

Yeah we're just getting the muddy gray overcast here with a little yellow.
