2020 Offseason Thread

Sure.

I give you a year.

Like I said, Yzerman has time in my book, a good 4-5 seasons before I start complaining. Kenny delayed and kicked the can on tearing it all down and rebuilding this franchise, so Yzerman was behind where he could have been if Kenny had started to rebuild sooner.

Johansson looking pretty good in his first SHL action, supposed to be on the second pairing.

Our old friend Berggren also scored, if he turns out to be anything after the injuries that would be great

Newest Athletic mock has us with Perfetti

4. Detroit: Cole Perfetti, C, Saginaw-OHL

Max Bultman: The Red Wings need everything, and at this spot in the draft they’ll have the ability to go in a number of directions. But Perfetti, with his widely praised hockey smarts and puck skills, would check a number of boxes for Detroit. He can run the Red Wings’ future power play. He can score. He can make plays. And if he ends up being able to do all of that from the center position, it’ll be all the better.

The draft is October 6, right? I thought I saw that confirmed somewhere

Bettman now acknowledging that the upcoming season is unlikely to start on December 1, more like later December or even January. Yet insists that they want to play an 82- game season. Not sure why you need an 82-game season if you can't have fans. The NHL is a gate-driven league. You can't have a regular season that goes into June and then summer playoffs again (and then training camps and the start of the next season pushed back, and on and on). I'm hearing some talk in Canadian media that it may make financial sense to take a season off.

Ya I think it's the 6th/7th

Athletic thinks the Kings will take Stutzle at 2 but they've dropped him a few spots in their rankings (Wheeler at least).  Byfield - Rossi - Perfetti - Raymond - Holtz all were ranked ahead of Stutzle in his rankings.

By December I bet you'll see some fans in the stands.  Enough to make it profitable to the owners?  I don't know.

I've even seen talk of splitting the divisions up to make all the Canadian teams in one division and the Americans split in the others considering the travel restrictions from Canada to the US might not be lifted by then.

COVID is ending on November 4; the border should open by January.

I don't think I'll know on October 10th whether I like or dislike the Wings' pick or not.  It's like the year we picked Rasmussen. A bunch of players possible in that slot, will take a couple of years to figure out winners and losers.

The Raymond hype seems to be increasing.  Someone posted this on Reddit from Wheeler's Q and A on  The Athletic, at least it seems like we'll get someone with a little more talent than Rasmussen:

Question

Do you think Perfetti is the most likely Wings pick at 4? How is the player we’re getting going to slot in our prospect rankings?

Answer

He or Raymond, yeah. And either would instantly become the team's No. 1 prospect for me. With all due respect to Mo Seider, it would be pretty clearcut too. Stay tuned for my updated top 50 drafted prospects ranking.

Question

What are the realistic chances Byfield or Stuztle fall to the Red Wings at pick 4

Answer

Slim to none somewhere, without saying it's impossible

http://themalikreport.com/2020/09/25/two-things-regarding-swedish-prospects-and-two-wings-draft-targets/

Malik collected a couple reports on Swedish prospects Berggren and Grewe.  Also has some notes on Wings meeting with draft prospects.

I'm just desperate for any Wings news right now for some reason.  Feel free to ignore me talking to myself about people who will probably never see the NHL!

Except for 2005, I don't think the Wings have ever gone 10 months without playing like they will from mid-March 2020 to Januaryish 2021, not even in strike-shortened years.

It seriously feels like a lifetime.  I even remember how bad they looked and at this point I would still watch that.  I think....

I'm very anxious for Mantha and Bertuzzi to finally sign, it should be interesting to see what those contracts end up like.

I'm interested in whether he Wings will be active in the "take on cap hit, get assets" game. I have a hunch they won't be to any significant extent.

I wish they would...

Same with the Pistons...

I hope they at least try to take on bad contracts to get assets as well.  Seems smart while not contending.  Maybe something in the draft (less than 12 days away!) or if someone wants to make room for like a Pietrangelo or Hall in free agency.

Next trade deadline it'll be interesting to see if they can turn the Helm, Filppula, Glendening, Nemeth, or Bernier expiring contracts into anything significant... probably not.  But there's always our old friend Kenny Holland in Edmonton...

Staal has one year left on his deal for $5.7 million. The answer to the question above is yes. Staal is only owed $3.2 million in cash so if he has any kind of 1st half it's a decent contract to deal.

Summary of presser:

-Daley and Ericcson will not return

-Stall's no movement clause did not apply for this trade

-They are slotting him in the lineup as of now.

nice.  this is exactly how they should be using their cap space.

Yes, Yzerman said the right things yesterday:

https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2020/09/26/steve-yzerman-detroit-red-wings-marc-staal/3551771001/

"...as part of our rebuilding process, we’re trying to add draft picks, prospects, young players — future assets, really, to help us down the line. That’s where we are. In this trade, we get a second-round pick in the 2021 draft."

Yzerman didn’t rule out more trades with teams looking for salary cap relief.

“We’re still in a position to do that,” he said. “We have roster spots to fill. But we have to be careful — you can get to the cap very quickly. But we are in a position to potentially do future deals like this if they come along.”

"So we’re all really in uncharted waters. But the Red Wings are in position that we do have cap space. I hope to use it wisely."

This team will be god awful again this season.   Worst or 2nd worst in the league is almost guaranteed.  2022 is when they will be ready to get back into playoff contention.
