20 Years of Motownsports!

Recommended Posts

I think the other day MWG said that Motownsports was going to be 20 years old May 15, 2020.

If so, that is today!

I have been here the whole time as well as whatever the site was called before it was Motownsports.

So Happy Birthday to us!

I've "only" been here since 2003. Sure doesn't seem like many left from when I joined even. Don't forget Scott.

I came in in the Spring of 2002. Part of it was to monitor any “points pigs” for a WXYT promotion

I came here in 2006 on a tip from someone who posted in a chaotic Detroit News live thread during the Wings-Oilers playoff series that May. I suspect 2006 brought a huge spike in new users as my interest and that of others in the Tigers was awakened after being paused for so long.

What is a point pig?

In this case it was the sharing of “the words of the day, or phrase of the day” to accumulate points for on line auctions. Technically you were supposed to listen to the station. At the time the phrases were shared on line.

It’s derived from Prize Pig, a person who constantly monitors statins or stations and wins a large proportion of the on air giveaways.

Yes, Friday May 15, 2020 was the 20th Anniversary of MotownSports.com

There was a brief interruption at one point early (2002) on when we were known as MotownTigers.com due to a changeover in business ownership, but that was eventually resolved and we went back to using our original name.  Been going strong ever since.

Lots of memories over the past 20 years, some great, some not so great. I don't think I have to go into too much detail, but we've obviously lost some users along the way in very unusual and tragic ways... Overall this has been a wonderful experience for me and I've met a lot of great people throughout the years that have become close friends, and that is something that would not have happened without this website.

For those of you who have been around since the beginning or close to it, can you believe how fast the time has gone?  I was a newly married 20-something when this place started, now I'm a crotchety old man yelling at my teenaged kid to take a shower and comb his hair. It's been great and hopefully there will be many more years ahead!

I have been here since late 2002.  My first post involved telling somebody they were wrong about how they were evaluating Tigers players.  I haven't changed much.

This group originally started as part of the official MB of the Detroit Tigers, did it not?  Didn't you work for the team?  Or at least the group they hired to run their site?

I have probably argued vehemently with everyone here.  The one thing I think I was most wrong about.... was Max Scherzer.

I joined in 2007. The first thing I remember is a thread from Eric Cieo comparing Andrew Miller to Randy Johnson. What happened to a Eric?

I still see him on Twitter once in a while.  I think he got a life and doesn't like being on here all the time.

I do remember that MWG was originally known as TWG.

MLB was slow to the Internet as mlb.com was initially owned by a law firm.

I want to say this site existed in some form before everything was brought under the umbrella of MLB.com.

I believe the first post on this site - in its original format - was made by C.J. Nitkowski.

The site crashed when Randy Smith was fired.

That's all to the best of my memory and may or may nor be accurate.

Ronz has a pretty good memory!

Yes, this message board community originally started in the fall of 1999 on the Tigers official website. At that time I was known as TigersWebGuy because I ran the official website for the Tigers (the name was changed to MotownWebGuy after we became MotownSports). I was actually employed by a company called ACSports which had offices in New York city and Baltimore.  ACSports had contracts to run several professional sports teams websites, including 9-10 MLB sites.  They employed me as their local contact working directly with the Tigers organization.

I ran the Tigers website until May 15, 2000 when a new company took over the contract for the Tigers website.  On that date, ACSports and I relaunched our Tigers website as MotownSports.com.  The company that took over the website contract with the Tigers (Ignite Sports Media) ran the Tigers site for the remainder of the 2000 season.  MLB Advanced Media eventually took over all MLB team sites in 2001.

I continued to work with ACSports and run MotownSports.com (and other MLB message forums) until they went out of business in 2001, at which point I tried to acquire the MotownSports.com domain for my own.  Due to the pending business situation with ACSports, the domain was tied up in for a spell, which is why we operated as MotownTigers.com for a bit in 2001-02.  After I was able to secure the domain, we were back up and running on our own.  The rest is history...

CJ Nitkowski was one of our original users and did post a few times. Not sure if he made the very first post, but it was certainly an early post.

I recall hearing about MTS from @RedRamage when we were posting at some Tigers usenet site.  I think a few of you had mentioned posting there before.

I remember Nitkowski would post to an AOL Tiger message board from time to time also.  I think there was an article in Baseball Weekly about Nitkowski and the merging of baseball with the internet (pretty sure the term "social media" hadn't been coined yet).

Enter Perky Amy. What a disaster that was.
