That Piston team won 54 games and the heavily favored Lakers won 56. I think a lot had to do with the fact the Pistons were in a weak Eastern Conference. I also think the Lakers "four hall of famers" were over hyped since Malone and Payton were in the twilight of their careers, but Shaq and Kobe still won 3 of the previous championships.

I think the biggest factor was the Lakers had won 3 in a row paired with the fact they relatively breezed through the play-offs.

The Pistons, on the other hand, had relatively little play-off experience and went 7 games against NJ, 6 against Indiana - both series could have gone the other way easily.

Sportswriters as a group tend to oversell championship experience, and human nature in general has us thinking something that has happened 3 straight times is bound to continue happening.

The 2006 Tigers were too stupid to remember their lack of playoff experience until they were reminded of it in the World Series.

Watching the last dance and these pistons, it is impossible to notice the end scores.   Basketball was much better when the games were 90-83.  Modern day NBA is unwatchable.  75-63 at halftime is normal.  No one plays D and refs call fouls that don't exist.  It's not worth our time to watch.  Get back to low scoring games.  Better product.

There hasn't been much mention about Joe Dumars in The Last Dance.  Did Jordan edit him out as much as possible?

he doesnt fit the narrative of the mean pistons who were a speedbump on michael's way to superstardom.

Dan Patrick interviewed Charles Barkley the other day.  Barkley mentioned that it was Thomas, Dumars, Johnson, and Edwards that you didn't really want to get in a fight with.  He said any fight Laimbeer was in, he ended up getting hit in the face so you didn't worry about him because he didn't know how to fight.

You have nothing to worry about Chuck...

Oh, I'm not suggesting that Barkley was right, wrong, or indifferent.

I could see people being apprehensive with Dumars because of his football background.

I could see people not worrying about sparring with Laimbeer because (1) he was irritating you to the point of wanting to fight him anyway and (2) it ain't like he looked the part of fighter.

I didn't understand his mention of not fighting Thomas.

I was surprised he didn't mention Mahorn.

I even get Vinnie Johnson because he had a strong build. Isiah was feisty as all **** but built like a toothpick, he was more like an annoying gnat than any kind of fighter.

Laimbeer actually fought a few times but it was mostly after people took swings at him. He landed a few blows to my recollection too so he could swing 'em when he got going. Nobody wanted to mess with Mahorn, well except for Isiah swinging at him like a little kid haha.

The guy who was the most imposing but couldn't fight for **** was Shaq. His whiffs on Brad Miller and Barkley were legendary and hugely hilarious.

Because Isiah is the guy that would actually be trying to kill you.

Laimbeer baited people.  I never got the impression he actually wanted to fight.

Yup, half of his game was mental, taking the opponent out of what they wanted to do physically and mentally.  I appreciate his honesty about it and how that was what he needed to do to get the most out of his abilities to help his team win.

I recall those two got into it, but forgot if it was that game or not.  The video cut off.  But there was enough to show Mahorn's unorthodix preshot free throw form.

I am going to guess that was Mahorn's first visit back to The Palace after he was taken by Minnesota in the expansion draft and traded to Philadelphia?

Vinnie looked like a beer keg with limbs.

I suppose its true about Thomas being the guy that could kill you.  Born in Chicago.  13 years of Catholic elementary & high school.  Bobby Knight.  The demons had to be unleashed at some point after all of that.

Laimbeer was a really talented player and was a passive aggressive personality on the court.  He whined consistently at everyone about anything, and maybe that was a strategy, but I suspect it just is who he is.  I've known people like that, I'd guess most people have.  He just did it in front of people on a basketball court.

He would fight when someone got tired of putting up with him.

Those demons were there long before he went to Indiana.  I'd speculate Bobby's style appealed to him at least initially.

i remember laimbeer getting into a bunch of altercations with people.  daugherty, barkley.  laimbeer would go after you and wouldnt just bait you and turtle.  he wasnt claude lemieux.

yes, he was trying to get under your skin but he wasnt afraid to pop people or stand up for his teammates.

I didn't mean to imply he would turtle.  I don't think he ever did.

I just think he baited and whined and fouled hard figuring it was all good because he was pursuing a win, and if someone swung at him, it was on.  He also did not like it when he got served his own medicine.

I guess my larger point is I don't know if it was strategy/gamesmanship, or just run of the mill ***holery that happened to work in his milieu and it just was who he was all the time.
