Here's an article that captures my feelings. "Going in Circles"...

Today was a very disappointing day, sapped most of the hope I had after the draft unless some follow up moves are made.

Honest question, why do they need flexibility the next two season?  The next two seasons are about the pistons losing and getting good draft picks.  That seems likely.  That’s the plan. Lose and have vets help the young guys.   Year 3 you can trade expirings and know all but rookie contracts come off the books.

To take on bad contracts and accumulate picks which is what Weaver said was his objective and seemed on the right track with the Ariza trade. Instead, they overpayed guys to multi-year contracts who will hardly move the needle exactly like Dumars and SVG did and are right back where they were before Drummond and Jackson were moved with a team that's kind of stuck in the middle with not many future assets or cap space to work with.

They have a few extra added prospects which is nice but they need a lot more and don't have the assets, as of now, to really stock the cupboard. We'll see where this goes from here but today was a step back.

Yesterday was great.  Today was great.  You’re looking to be upset.  Too bad.

Do you always have to argue like a child instead of actually providing a useful counter instead of "oh, you're so negative, have fun never enjoying anything"? Talk about insufferable.

Man, I laid my position out in this thread, check the tape.  You didn’t bother to read it.   Weaver has had two days to be the GM and you come in here with your “today was a step back.”

I don't agree with your position, obviously. All you've done is counter with childish remarks but I'm sure you know that already.

Agree to disagree. Cheers

That DBB article is so terrible and full of bad takes.

The best part is how articles like this tear these moves up because we signed average players for too much money...but then they go on to say that it shows we're trying to "win now". Which is it? Are they bad players signed for too much or are we trying to win now?

"These players don't move the needle."  Exactly.  It's called a rebuild.  We'll rebuild the culture with hard working players and youth, get some high picks, and in a couple years these contracts will be gone or tradeable.  There aren't any 5 year deals here and you've got to give somebody that money for now.

I'm a fan of what was done tonight, and I'm guessing it's not over.

This is exactly what I've been waiting for for a decade now.

a thousand times YES!

The churn will continue for at least 2 years.

Blake and Rose will get traded between today and the trade deadline. Probably Wright as well.

Grant is interesting; the Nuggets tried to retain him at the same amount and they know what they are doing.

If Wood blows up, Weaver will have to explain that call.

Plumlee is obvious overpay; oh well.

Hate (H.A.T.E.) the two stretch payments after Josh Smith nonsense; oh well.

the only real questions i have are stretching two players and signing grant.  and i dont really mind signing grant.

stretching seems stupid to me.  they were going to be off the books in another year.

Wild couple days. The only thing I really don’t understand is signing Plumlee when we already had Dedmon on the roster. Why sign Plumlee and cut/Stretch Dedmon? They could’ve just let Dedmon play out his contract and not even bothered with Plumlee.

I really like the Grant signing. He could be a really good player here. Played very well with Denver, who supposedly offered him the same contract and he chose Detroit.

Maybe I'm giving Weaver too much credit but he definitely strikes me as a person that is looking 2 or 3 steps ahead on every decision he makes.  I have faith that there is a method to the perceived madness other than just throwing money at guys cause we're going to suck for 2-3 years anyway so what difference does it make.

I agree with you in principle about stretching.  I suppose there is a time and place for it.  If it helps acquire a final piece of a legit contender, something like that.  But that certainly isn't what is happening here.

Maybe I'm missing something about it.  Maybe I'd just too jaded about Josh Smith being stretched.

I think Grant might be signing high off of his playoff performance as well.

I can handle a losing team for another couple of years if there is a direction in play.  The team was going to lose no matter what anyway.  Its just impossible take the end of last season roster, go through the draft with one pick, add some free agents, sprinkle in some magic pixie dust, and find a .500 team out of all of that in the next season.

I think its obvious Weaver is trying to shake up the roster, but I think there's probably some culture changing going on as well.  Its not to say that every player that has been moved is a bad apple, or that every player brought in is a team leader.

I think the thing to keep in mind is that Weaver is beginning his transformation of the team.  We've been saddled watching a crippled franchise chasing mediocrity for years now.  I think the fan base has a legitimate gripe as far as how the last decade has played out.

And I guess somewhat in tune with your point, maybe some of the moves Weaver made has gotten us a little too punch drunk simply because they were moves?

Time will tell.

Let's just get the frozen envelope ready for Emoni Bates.

Basically, Weaver said he wants to build a team that will compete every night.  This team will do that.  They'll defend, give effort every night, run, and have good character.  They'll "compete" but don't confuse that with "win."  They still aren't talented enough to do that.  A healthy Blake is still the best player on the team and once he shows he's healthy, he's probably gone in a trade.  Let's not forget that you don't need to be in the 10 win range to get a top 3 pick anymore.

I am sad to see Ariza and Dedmon go. These guys truly had the mentality that every day could be their last with the club. They never let up their intensity since their first day of becoming Pistons.  I also hope that time with vets like this will will rub off on the younger players.

Pretty good, honest evaluation of Grant from a couple months ago.

Strengths: Finishing, catch & shoot, efficiency, defense, transition, versatility
Weakness: Dribbling, rebounding

The obvious answer is probably the correct one, Weaver liked Plumlee as a player and team fit, and didn't Dedmon. Was only interested in Dedmon because the financial implications of getting rid of him were more advantageous than Snell.
