I’m waiting for Woj to break the news the Pistons have re-signed Josh Smith for 5 more years.

I couldn't tell you if either contract is decent value.  But it is pretty weird that we would sign two centers.

Not really.  Gives Stewart some bigs to lean on.  Dedmond will be moved, okafor is a vet min, Plummee will be in his final year when the pistons will just beginning a hopeful rise.  This will be a team that will get a top 5 again next year.

So far, I haven't seen anybody say anything positive about the Plumlee deal.

I do think Plumlee is going to help Hayes' development.  He sets great picks and in general is a good pick and roll big.  Also a solid passer.   Not worth what they gave him but he does provide value that may not show up just looking at the box score.

I guess you can always find ways to justify a contract based on value.  The problem with this from what I am reading is 8 million per year is very excessive for Plumlee.  I know we are rebuilding and it isn't going to matter much in the long run but it never makes sense to spend recklessly either.

I have a hard time seeing it as reckless.  As you acknowledged. It simply won’t matter. Give the young fella some vet experience. I’m good with that.

Plumlee is a decent backup center.  athletic and is a good pick and roll guy.

okafor on a minimum - if it is the minimum - is fine.  pure upside move.

none of these deals are killers, even if plumlee is overpaid.  and like tp said, were tanking.

and if it prevents us from doing something dumb like overpaying christian wood on a long term deal, that's ok with me too.

I thought I had been hearing some love for Christian Wood here....or was that satire?

FWIW Hollinger and his projection systems pegged Plumlee to get between 5 or 6 million a year so going by that its about a 2-3 million a year overpay.  Not great but not some major albatross either.

he's a really good player on a bad team.  on a good team?  he's a nice complimentary piece.  dont pay him like he's something he's not, and i think someone else will pay him a lot of money based on what he did last year.

I really like the Jackson signing.  Great low risk/high ceiling flyer on a talented young player that has had a disappointing start to his career.  He played very well last year splitting time in the G league and then the Grizz

Hollinger absolutely shreds the Pistons on Plumlee move.  Behind a paywall on The Athletic but thinks the money is too much and can’t figure why they’ve needed to add 5 centers and if they like Center so much why not use their cap money on a Whiteside, Harrell, Poeltl, Favors, or Ibaka.

Actually, his formula rates him being worth 3.5 million but does admit this seems low and speculates he could get 5 million.  So it is really more like a 4-5 million overpay.  I wonder if we could have done this deal as two years instead of three given the annual salary.

Just a wild guess, but is he money to help offset trades in the future? For example if we want a 16 million guy and have nothing but 2 million guys, well you gotta give a bunch to make the money work

I don't think we know that Christian Wood is just a nice complimentary piece yet.  He did not start getting heavy minutes until February and that is when he broke out.  The sample size is very small but I don't think it would be at all surprising if he became more than a complimentary player.
