Then what was the point of the Taxi squads?  Unless they thought they were going to get away with isolated cases instead of what the Marlins did.

I wonder if when they were sitting around cooking up the taxi squad plan they could foresee that with no minor league ball, teams would use chunks of their taxi squads for prized but unready prospects like the Tigers have done?

Great thought. Having a taxi squad loaded with younger prospects allowed the prospects to get supervised work in. And get innings in in the case of our prized pitching prospects. Obviously, in the case of the Marlins that's not working out.

It's the equivalent of the military trying to construct a reserve squad and having to choose between guys in the academy with no battle experience as opposed to bringing guys in who have some battle experience.

Had a strange thought - I wonder in extremely humid states, like parts of florida and texas, if cv19 hangs longer in the moist air?

I had another strange thought that involves the green chicks from Star Trek but that's too far off topic

5 games in, I’m finding having Tigers baseball back has been therapeutic for me.  I don’t feel like anything In the actual gameplay or viewing experience has been compromised.  I don’t really even notice anymore that there aren’t fans in the stands or the announcers aren’t actually at the away games.

Watching the games, regardless of the outcome, has been a welcome distraction and a small return to normal that I have missed.  I don’t know how long the season will last, but I’m thankful to see some real baseball again.

Hope you’re all enjoying it, too. Except for leflore.

Agreed same here,  I'm hoping I'll have that same experience with other sports too but I'm a little skeptical since I tended to notice fans more before in the non baseball sports so I'm assuming I'll notice their absence more.

watching the home games isn't that weird without the fans..... I Just pretend there was a long rain delay and it's midnight rather than 8:30.

If they didn't fire him they could pipe in some Charlie the hot dog guy stuff... maybe just random shouting.  Let fans contribute $100 for charity to send in a taunt and they'll play each one a few times a game.

fans were complaining.  They made him quit singing all the time... they allowed him to do it once a game.  But then some regulars in the rich people seats were getting upset with him harassing people for things like putting ketchup on hot dogs.  Last I heard he was selling suits out of a designer store in Allen Park.  That was a few years ago.

One unexpectedly nice thing about this season despite all the weirdness surrounding it: the radio broadcasts with Dan and Jim sound pretty much the same as ever.

Is it me or is Shep and Morris worse this year than last year?

Hard to tolerate. I watched the Reds feed for 2 of the games.

It's just you that's worse than last year. 😉 Morris and Shep couldn't get any worse.

Lol I'm thoroughly enjoying the games. Even watched the Turnbull game twice - first via Reds feed, then while tolerating shep and Jack. I suppose my enjoyment would be less if the team still fielded a AAAA squad, but imho adding Romine, Maybin, Cron and Schoop gives them the look of a team approaching mediocreville. And barring injuries, who knows, maybe .500 isn't completely unrealistic in this short season.

A final observation - I am starting to believe JaCoby could be a starter going forward. Maybe .250, 15-20 HR and 15-20 SB, .750 OPS with great defence.

The shortened season was a great attempt by MLB .. but already appears doomed.

Considering the current situation with the Marlins ..am thinking the planned 60-game season will be called off within the next 10 days.  Simply put, I believe there is a very high likelihood that too many positive cases involving several teams will heighten the fears among all those personally involved in the sport.  Moreover, IMHO ..some of the players/teams appear to be not taking the virus serious enough .. not practicing social distancing seriously enough .. including the TIGERS!

.. I posted that just 5-days ago.  As of right now (Sunday Aug 2 @ 12:40pm) per MLB standings & overall schedule, 17 of 132 games (13%) have been postponed due to covid so far.   Additionally, about 20 MLB players have already opted out of playing this year including David Price, Ryan Zimmerman, Lorenzo Cain, & Buster Posey.  So while it may or may not be within the 10-day window I suggested 5-days ago .. it is still very relevant to ask how much longer MLB will continue this 2020 season before shutting it down for good?

Holy crap! What a new and interesting topic! Thanks for bumping yet another covid thread that had been inactive for 2 months.

Sorry. It's just weird to me when people bump their own threads for no apparent reason. Cary on.

LOL .. imagine .. someone complaining about the originator of this discussion for posting about Covid-19 in the only thread with Covid-19 in its title!  Fact is, without Tiger games to watch, I had not been sitting in front of TV with my laptop on & open to this site.  Thus, had not been regularly following all discussions here.  .. .. .. .. .. .. Weird, huh?

I kinda freaked out,  not knowing it was an older thread. I thought, at first, MLB was suspended. Whew, play ball!

It was not my intent to confuse.  I'd like to see the 60-game season play out to completion too.  Unfortunately, I just do not think that will be happening.
