How did this become a systemic norm?

Also, I found this link interesting which a lot of you may already be familiar with but I’m only just now getting around to reading it.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-cause-of-lengthening-mlb-games/

that was in 2016.  the average time of a baseball game in 2019 was five minutes longer.

manfred complains about the players taking too long in between pitches.  well....DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.  youre the commissioner, change the damn rules and make the umpires enforce them.

you are in charge.  act like it.

I hope the players stand firm on their salary demands and don’t give an inch. Ultimately, I hope they don’t play at all this year and the owners take a hit.

I do look forward to minor league ball if there is anything left of it next year.

If they don't play at all this year over money - this game is ******.

I think we will see some minor league baseball in independent leagues this summer.   I think at some point we'll see some baseball over at the Utica park.   Heck, with so many minor leaguers cut loose, they could actually expand the league beyond the 4 teams and have some better players.  They could totally take advantage of this and have a great summer.

(Unless they've already cancelled their season and I missed it).

Are you suggesting fans be allowed in? Otherwise how could independent leagues make it work financially? The independent league team that draws the most fans happens to be 4-5 blocks from my office. In Minnesota we aren't near allowing fans into events yet. Just saying

As a thought exercise, I do wonder about all of the minor league players that aren’t on the 40 man roster and aren’t part of the union. If negotiations with MLB and the union break down, would MLB and MiLB work together to play developmental games for non union players. Would the union consider minor leaguers playing in minor league venues to be scabs? The current situation isn’t exactly a strike.

isn't social distancing inherent in most independent league games?

Not a team owned in part by Mike Veeck (son of Bill) and Bill Murray. They have crazy fan events every game and are a big draw. Murray shows up from time to time

The shortened season was a great attempt by MLB .. but already appears doomed.

Considering the current situation with the Marlins ..am thinking the planned 60-game season will be called off within the next 10 days.  Simply put, I believe there is a very high likelihood that too many positive cases involving several teams will heighten the fears among all those personally involved in the sport.  Moreover, IMHO ..some of the players/teams appear to be not taking the virus serious enough .. not practicing social distancing seriously enough .. including the TIGERS!

Holy crap! What a new and interesting topic! Thanks for bumping yet another covid thread that had been inactive for 2 months.

Sorry. It's just weird to me when people bump their own threads for no apparent reason. Cary on.

  • Thanks 1

Seems valid to return to this discussion after what's happening to the Marlins and whether MLB can finish the season. One week in and we already have two games postponed. Then again, I'm not the arbiter of what's valid.

The discussion is already taking place in 5 other threads. That's all I was saying.

I kinda freaked out,  not knowing it was an older thread. I thought, at first, MLB was suspended. Whew, play ball!

what is the timeline for testing positive?  if youre tested two days later and its negative, but then say you test positive five days later could it be from the original contact even if you tested negative before?

It's something like 2-12 days. So yes.

Part of the problem is that you can never take too much from a single negative for any test that is taken with a swab or saliva sample. Those simply are not fool proof ways of getting sample material from a human body and will produce the occasional false negative even with good sample technique and perfect test accuracy. So for that reason alone we will see a certain background noise level which in turn can produce the situation above.

Marlins season on hold....

Not even going to bother with the reserves, eh?  What a mess.  I suspected issues, but not right away.

probably an integrity thing--asking a AAA team to play against major league teams is an issue.

Of course, hasn't stopped the Tigers the last 3 seasons <rim shot>

Back in April I wasn't feeling good.  Finally my dad convinced me to go to emergency to take the COVID test. Came back negative.  They kept me in the hospital for 5 days, during that time tested me again. Another negative. All the doctors and nurses were convinced both tests were false negatives and were treating me as if I had the virus anyway because I had the symptoms.

I'm doing much better now.

Then what was the point of the Taxi squads?  Unless they thought they were going to get away with isolated cases instead of what the Marlins did.
