Coronavirus: Coming to a Neighborhood Near You?

You have a standard office visit to the dr, they have shots available...you get one.  The politics and paperwork is ridiculous.  Paperwork is necessary to track, but the damn politics...

I have 3 different doctors and none of them will be offering the vaccine. I may be able to get one thru their health care system though. Just wait and hope they call/text/email me. Hopefully, I won't fall thru the cracks.

that's not how the covid vaccines are distributed.  It's a very messy process that's confusing for many people.  The short supply and storage requirements makes establishing a better method almost impossible.  Somehow people are getting them but it seems to be very random.  It's like buying concert tickets.... just have to keep trying and hope you get into a slot.  As soon as an appointment window opens up it's snapped up within minutes.

That's why I felt a little guilty about getting my shot when I volunteered. I wasn't virtue signaling.  I was thinking about the many people I know who are in a vulnerable category and the optics of 'jumping in line'.  But i justified it to myself that without my help then maybe the 800 people I helped get their shot that day is 300 without volunteers making it an easier and better process.

I know someone who got one "through a doctor dude friend" as his wife told us....  that's shameful.

Well, it's here. A strain that's more contagious and possibly more dangerous. The antibodies from previous infections won't protect people and the vaccines don't work against it. It sounds kinda scary;

I have heard (only anecdotally) that a lot of people are taking their parents out of nursing homes because they aren't allowed to visit.

I've seen those stories about the CA strain but numbers have been plummeting there..... also the results have not yet been studied yet.  See lots of pushback from other doctors that it's not good to publish those kind of papers without proper study of the "results" they are basing it on.  It just upsets people.

I get all that.  If you are offered a shot and want it, take it.  There is no need to feel guilty about anything.  I thought I made my point clear, but apparently I did not..it is the bureaucracy of the whole thing that is annoying and organizing multiple vaccine shots for over 360 million people is a fools errand.  Do the best you can, but just get shots in arms is all I was saying.  By any means.

Yes, I've read other doctors saying it's been around since the spring. But it's still alarming. Left unchecked, this virus will eventually mutate into one that tests won't detect. And also one the vaccine (or past infection) won't protect against. That's why getting to herd immunity levels is so incredibly important.

It's not 360 million people. I've read that there are about 255 million people over 18 years old in the U.S. And there is a percent that will refuse the vaccination. And yes, the bureaucracy of it is very annoying. Biden had to basically start the rollout from scratch because all Trump was concerned about was the election, lying about voter fraud and trying to start a civil war. He couldn't care less about an effective vaccine rollout, unless he could make (steal) money from it.

I get my first dose Monday at Ford Field.  I filled out the registration on Oakland County's website that my School District sent me like a month ago, never heard back, so the other day I heard about Meijer offering it for School Employees and I filled it out on their site.  Two days later and they schedule me this appt.  I wish I would have gone through them from the beginning.

we just had a covid-19 vaccinations call at my work put on my the chief medical officer big wigs, it was really great.  In the trials across 6 vaccines available around the would, totaling an N of ~90k, all of them reported 100% effectiveness against hospitalization and death.  They even included the sputnik one in that total.

that's what they need to keep emphasizing.  Using the "effectiveness" number is misleading because people assume that the effects go down "X%" and that's NOT what it means.  I was screwing it up myself until I actually learned what it was supposed to represent.

So it means even if you're exposed to it you may not get it? And if you do, it would be a mild case? How about being contagious? The last I heard, you could still transmit it by shedding virus. Is that still true or is the jury still out on that?

Local officials here are warning folks not to pass along emails or links they sent out for a vaccination this week. There is going to be disappointed folks when they show up and are not on the list.

The Pfizer rollout in Israel is showing that it prevents spread in a big way.  Not just you but your chance of spreading. That’s very good news.

even at a vaccine that says 65% that’s still very good. The fact nobody with a vacccine has been hospitalized with covid is such good news.  That’s better than the flu shot.  People often say they don’t get that shot because “they got it once and got the flu”.... that’s not the point of the shot. It’s to stop you from going to the hospital or getting pneumonia.

Lol...my doctor doesn't really give me a choice about the flu shot. She usually asks me when I want to schedule the shot. I don't argue because I want it anyway. And I do read every year it's around 35% or so. So when I saw the covid vaccines in the 90%+ range, my jaw hit the floor. Just amazing. I signed up for Meijer pharmacy a couple of weeks ago but I'm not real confident in them. I should be in the 1c group, but how are they supposed to know my medical history? And I can't even find out how to sign up anywhere else. Rite Aid doesn't seem to allow sign-ups. I live in Wayne County, should I sign up with them? There sure is a lot of confusion for the average person, I feel sorry for the older generation who may not be able to use the internet. And they're the vulnerable ones.

Sign up for all of them. My parents signed up with Macomb County and Meijer and got contacted by both of them. Macomb County was first so they went there.

I'm enjoying being socially distant so I'm in no hurry.

My dad just got his first dose today and I get teary eyed thinking about this being the first step in being able to hug my parents again. He got his through Meijer. Hoping my mom hears something back to get hers today.

I hear you, my Dad is coming over to celebrate his birthday tomorrow (got his shots a few weeks ago). He has not seen his grandkids for a year!

Yes, I want to sign up for all of them. But can a Wayne County resident sign up with a different County? And what other pharmacies are offering it besides Meijer? I looked into Rite Aid but they won’t even allow a 61 year old to sign up. A really confusing rollout, it really shouldn't be this difficult. I agree with JBK on this issue.
