Coronavirus: Coming to a Neighborhood Near You?

It’s just unstoppable now. Too many have it. In 3 weeks I bet the daily numbers are still in the thousands. Any mitigation from closing things will be off set by gatherings. Too many people just don’t care about it anymore. We got pushback from certain family members when we said nobody for thanksgiving except us and my mother in law wnd brother in law. And insisting on masks because he’s out and about all the time. He wanted to bring his girlfriend  who has 6 grown kids that she sees all the time and travels to different states. She’s also one who “doesn’t get the flu shot.  My sons a chiropractor, remember?”  I don’t know entirely what that means but I guess he’s a quack and vaccines are evil.

My SIL  was up from Tx for a few days - the SO told her we would not put her up unless she got tested  - which she did and it was all good. I just finished 11 weeks seeing a total of over 100 students in small groups every day. Everyone followed the drill. Masks 100% of the time, face shields whenever working in close groups and lots of hand sanitizer use. Our lab space does also have great ventilation. We had zero transmissions in our lab setting between either students or to the 7 GSIs on our staff despite having students go into quarantine who caught it in other places. So it's not impossible, or maybe we were incredibly lucky. In any case what we did for Covid was was not particular hard or debilitating to do and the payoff was doing some curriculum that cannot be duplicated online. (I don't really count myself because I think it's at least 50/50 I had a barely symptomatic case back in the Spring.)

Yeah, people really are fed up with the social distancing, which has been going on for eight months now.

I think a lot of people, meaning the ones who know it's obviously real, are coming around to the idea that since half the country isn't even trying and maybe never did, everyone is going to end up getting it anyway, whether it's over Thanksgiving, Christmas, or way into next year. And if you're gonna get it anyway, might as well live life like you always have, get it, and get it over with. I've heard at least two people express that very thought.

This is where I see the huge disconnect and bankruptcy  - especially in the US so called Evangelical Right. OK - fine, lets stipulate that if you are a middle age and down healthy person your odds of this being more than an inconvenience if you get it are inside what most people may be willing to accept  for themselves. And that is fine, if that were as far as it went. But as we know, it isn't. There are millions of us, and our mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, for whom the risk is all too real. People who we are supposed to care about. People certainly that people who call themselves Christian are supposed to care about. We have reached a point in our culture today where half the people apparently are of the view that saving some stranger's life is no longer worth inconveniencing them. How can a society like that survive long term?

Infuriating, isn't it?  Hey, as long as they can be holy for an hour or two a week, I guess they think everything else is absolved.

FTFY.

Although I guess I'm not really saying anything different...

and what does  make it even more infuriating is that we can already see the light at the end of the tunnel at this point. People can't be that patient?

We’ve become an “on demand” society. Everything has to be instantaneous. Asking people to wait a couple of months or so until it’s their turn for the first dosage. Mask up and social distance until it’s their turn for round #2, then wait the prescribed period to make everything takes.....

I think we are in for at least another year of this.

That’s the missing part of their calculation. Everyone is focused on the effect getting it has on themselves and give nary a thought to the effect they have in spreading it to others.

This is something about which we agree.

In some ways I feel fortunate being married to someone who treats the patients. People in the hospital now are not just “old” or “obese”.  I am constantly reminded that her patients are often healthy people in their 40s and 50s. 22 patients now at her hospital with 11 in the ICU.  A good friend of mine is 63 and in great physical shape tested positive Monday. I saw him almost two weeks ago. We work out in group classes. We are outside. He’s very careful and has been from the beginning.  He quit coming to our classes, indoors, in February before it all hit the fan. His daughter in law is from China and their “Chinese” wedding was cancelled so he was on top of the news before any of us.   Last night he told me he feels like he got beat up.   I haven’t heard from him today.

I've heard stories about people who were sure they did everything right and still caught it. I think it's just so highly contagious,  all you need to do is be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

But then you have the people who are careless, don't wear masks unless they're forced to and don't social distance. And they don't get it. Smh

That doesn't mean they were not exposed enough to get it though. It appears that a good chunk (maybe 30% or more by some estimates that I have read) of the population are already resistant because they happened to have had some corona virus cold in the past that was close enough to CV19 to leave them with cross immunity. Those people already have their 'get out of jail free" card, they just have no way of  knowing who they are  - at least without expensive testing they aren't likely to ever be offered.

You think it’s that high?  I am not questioning it. When you look at confirmed cases and uncomfirmed and add in that 30% at some point it has nowhere to go?

heard a doc say last night that if you are hospitalized today you have a 50% greater survival rate than in April and May.

.... and that’s the really good news.

Thank God we’re doing better with treatments.

Maybe right now. The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas are going to be rough. Overwhelm the hospitals and all bets are off.

Hospitals in Michigan sent out emails to their nurses and other workers. They are to report to work even if they're positive, as long they're asymptomatic.

The one thing that has surprised me is how little progress has been on pharmaceutical anti-virals. I really thought they would find something in the cupboard that would have some good effect -- but nada. I had to do a research paper on anti-virals in the 80's and HepC and HIV seem to be all we have to show since then, which is something but overall pretty underwhelming. Tuning the use of steroids and blood thinners has been a huge help but as life saving as they are, they are still only supportive therapies as opposed to cures.

Michigan taxpayers but you know what is really frustrating for Trump?  He couldn't figure out a way to pocket some of the air fare.  Looks like maybe 6 hotel rooms, plus the meals - he stole 100% of that money.

Thats ok because they are male and “boys will be boys”.   That’s just how you do things. But I will wait for another lecture about how easy we are on that woman and now mean we are to the GOP and Trump because doing that can only mean we are being “tribal” about it rather than simple honest political discussion and criticism when warranted.

At work? And how many of us believe these guys when they said they only discussed state support from the virus and not the election? It's like, yeah right. Did they work up that excuse on the way to D.C. or did Donny tell them to say that to the fake media?

He's not that smart.
