Coronavirus: Coming to a Neighborhood Near You?

I went to get takeout bar burgers last night from a local bar, a famous one in Dearborn(not miller’s).  It was packed. Every table and seat filled.  People standing. Another place nearby closed after a staff member tested positive. Overheard someone say “other place closed down so we gotta come here”

3000+ cases a day means we will do the herd mentality before a vaccine.  Confirmed cases around 180,000, I think the true number is 10 times that. That puts us around 20% and we’d be adding another 2% a month at this rate if you assume we are still not getting confirmation of each infection.

We drove by a burger place in Dearborn on the way back from the train station light show with the kids, we never got out of the car, but it was cool for the kids to see the lights and you could tune in to the spooky sounds on the radio....the burger place was PACKED.  We noticed it immediately and both commented on it.  It has floor to ceiling glass windows in the front and was lit up like Christmas.

We were talking about the Holidays last night. We are going to stay home and no family for Thanksgiving. It doesn’t seem as bad here as it does in Michigan but I did see a couple of maskless folks at the local supermarket. I made sure I stayed in different aisles.

Our son and grandson are supposed to come in for a few days Christmas week. Gonna wait and see the lay of the land then. We do have tickets the weekend before Christmas in Colonial Williamsburg. They’ve cut back on the scope of the activity and limited it to ticket holders only, and a limited number at that. It’s outdoors and they are keeping non ticket holders away so hopefully it will work out.

Granted I do not go out much at all these days, but when I have every single person is wearing a mask.  I literally cannot recall the last time I was in public and saw someone without a mask on inside.  Now outside is another matter, I have seen plenty of people walking with no masks on, but not in super crowded areas.

I went to drop off a couple packages at the fedex spot this morning. They require masks. Some dude across the store had his down and was talking on his cell phone about something.

Every single time I go to the grocery store, there is without exception at least 1 or 2 fools who are wearing masks either below their chin or below their nose.  Occasionally, one of these fools is a store employee.  I'd say something but, you know, who wants to get shot?

I know which one you mean I think.  When I go down Michigan I check all the places out of curiosity. Part to see how busy in terms of the virus and also out of concern for the business owners because I want them to do well.  The place I am referring to is a neighborhood bar.  I was just disappointed.  The owners are great community people and the bar is featured a lot in media.  You can also see Derek  Lowe’s jersey and Dennis Vial’s sweater.

The federal government will withhold funding that the states receive if they don’t comply with a federal law like that. In the past they have withheld money from the highway fund to get states to follow federal laws. They have done it to raise the drinking age to 21 and to impose the old 55 mph speed limit for example.

You gotta pass a law, though.

let's look at Michigan then.  Biden gets a law passed, Whitmer wants the money, has an ally in Biden, and already has shown that she wants to encourage masks (if not mandate).  Again though, west side of the state, maybe UP decide not to enforce.  So Michigan is out the money?  You really think Biden would withhold from Michigan?  At that point, what can Biden/Whitmer do?  Unless now we're talking about Whitmer doing her own laws to put incentives at a more local level.  But again, that's a long process.

Having Biden in place and simply having the POTUS not contradict the experts and states that are doing things right is a good first step and is better than nothing.  But I think my initial point still stands, it's too little to late.  And that's not a knock on Biden, if he's elected, it's just part of a 'no win' situation that Trump put him in.

Yesterday at Meijer I saw an older guy with the mask below his nose.  Luckily for all of us, he was so unhealthy that walking down the aisle meant he was mouth breathing.

Pretty sure I know which place you are talking about, my wife and I were just talking about them the other day when discussing burgers.  The place I am talking about was East Dearborn.  We have not even considered going to a bar just to go to a bar, but we are kind of out of that scene at this point in our lives anyway.  We have gone out to eat a handful of times since March and had drinks, but never to the bar to just get a drink.....shoot thinking about it now I am not even sure the last time we went to the bar for just a drink...it was WAAAAY before COVID though, like probably years.

I think we read the Aztecs warning wrong. They must have meant 2020, not 2012.

And this will continue in 2112 (The Twilight Zone) to infinity.

Did they get that from the Twilight Zone?

Infection rates still blowing up in Kent , Oakland, Macomb, Western Wayne Counties. Numbers are getting stupid big = 6700 for Sunday/Monday.

Ironically, rates are falling in Ingham and Washtenaw as the student populations shrug it off.

3200 daily is the new normal.

part of it is simple ignorance that there’s a spike. Family members didn’t know cases were going up when we told them our sons birthday party this weekend is being downsized and outside.  People don’t watch or read the news.

I live in Indiana and masks are required inside any business. Is this not the case in Michigan?

Required and enforced are two entirely different animals, unfortunately.

Who gets to tell grandma that we're not coming over for Thanksgiving dinner?

We did that yesterday with my wife’s sister and family. I know my side is not getting together for the day after, combination of teachers already in the cesspool and those of us susceptible

BTW just looked at the cumulative Michigan figures. We’ve basically wiped out Brighton

Down here, it is on the business to enforce.  If they don’t, the business itself is fined.  In the case of places licensed to sell alcohol, additionally their TABC license is temporarily revoked.

Her retirement home/the state of Michigan.  She has a functioning senior-friendly tablet that we have been calling her on for... oh... 8 months now. And we got her a 100th birthday shoutout on the Today Show.

That call was made by Grandma last week. A decision which left her in tears, but she knew was the right thing to do. Too bad more people don't have that kind of guts.

This is where it gets tough though and I don't necessarily think there is simply a right/wrong answer.  My grandma is being careful, but my grandpa passed away just prior to Covid and while she doesn't want to die, she doesn't want to live like this either.  We had some rare family drama earlier this year when that side of the family wanted to do a Zoom call.  My grandma, nor my aunt that lives with her, know enough about computers to get it running.  My other aunt went over there, setup the computer, got them logged in.  (Taught my other aunt how to do it for future calls as well)  She stayed socially distanced the entire time, with a mask on.  Some family members were livid at both aunts, one for going over there, the other for letting it happen.   I don't want my grandma to die, but she's in her mid 90's and her hips have deteriorated in the last 1-2 years, so she's even quite blunt that without her moving as much, she doesn't know how much longer she has.  She may not have another year left and if that's the case, I certainly don't want her to spend it completely isolated.

All that said, she has 14 kids, a Thanksgiving dinner with just the immediate family isn't going to work either.
