Coronavirus: Coming to a Neighborhood Near You?

Recommended Posts

I can see value in antibody testing to try to guage how contagious the virus is. If you could determine a high % of antibody or T cells but are still seeing a regular cadence or positives then you know this isn’t just hitting the people who aren’t doing the right things.  But if you see numbers drop some and that correlates to higher rates of infected people then maybe you see “progress”. It also can help with vaccine preparation and distribution.   The study I was referring to was about HIT, herd immunity threshold. The guess was around 25% was when we start to see dramatic drops in cases... with the caveat that we are still wearing masks and distancing, etc. they based that on antibody tests wnd placed with drop offs in numbers. That seemed to be the number.

but make no mistake we are going to be doing what we are now until a vaccine is widely distributed. It’s not going to just go away where we get an “all clear” until then.

Was surprised to see that two of two leading counties for cases per 100k in Michigan are in the Upper Peninsula (Houghton, Iron).

Houghton makes sense because of Michigan Tech.... Iron, spillover from the outbreak in Northeast Wisconsin?

POTUS said "virtually nobody" in regards to 200K deaths.  But yeah go ahead and lecture me about being pro life.

Pro-life for the innocent pre-born. If you’re already born, you’re guilty.

It cruel to laugh at people in distress, but these were all people smart enough to have known better.

I can see where someone might be staying on board to try to maintain the scrupulous work of the healthcare agencies within the government, riding out this administration and doing all they can to promote the right health policies to the American public while waiting for a new administration to come in and fully back their work. Birx may be one. I see Redfield as probably another. They might have to make occasional concessions to maintain their position while still promoting the right science. It's a tricky balance.

I know there are lots of pure lefties screaming for Birx's and Redfield's heads on a platter for compromising even once, but if the lefties do get their platter, whom do they think will be chosen by Trump to be the successors? Better scientists who would never compromise to Trump?

the trick here is realizing when your position has become untenable and then making your exit have the most impact possible. This what so many of them fail at morally. If you are only there to try and make it better, don't slink away when the time comes so it can all be papered over  - choose your hill and die on it with guns blazing. (figuratively of course   - you know what I think about the 2A  xD)

Trump is on record saying he'll only get 'the best' people to work for him.  So obviously that's what would happen.

Trump's not lying. He absolutely does hire the best people for Trump.

Umich updated their dashboard to include testing that occurs outside of their health system and unsurprisingly there are now a lot more cases.

everybody seems to be losing it again. County is up, State is up, more states moving into red on the covid-act site. Natural selection finally having its way I guess.

Interesting! So my next immediate question is:: is it the statins or the their association with lower serum cholesterol levels? Since on the other side of the equation,  the overweight and hypertension are higher risk (both of which no doubt both correlate strongly with cholesterol levels), it would be interesting to see virulence correlated to serum lipid/sterol levels and how much stronger or weaker the correlation is than with the statin.

Quick aside, I’m a bit surprised here that Colonial Williamsburg is planning on going ahead with their annual Grand Illumination celebration albeit at a reduced level. Instead of one big fireworks display in the Colonial Capitol, it will be held on three Saturdays December, at one location. Tickets will be required for entry as will be masks.

For Michiganders think of the July 4th Fireworks at Greenfield Village. It’s probably on the same scale, but free.

About time, The rates up there have been high for some time. Maybe  they have finally given up waiting for magic.

My understanding is that it's a combo of Michigan Tech starting up and spillover from Northeastern Wisconsin, which is currently on an Arizona trajectory

catholic schools in chicago have been open with in person teaching for a month.

0 cases.

suburban schools are opening up again on a hybrid basis, which is what all schools should be doing at the very least.
