Yes Bush would have handled this a lot better than Trump. Back when Bush was president, we were holding our presidents to higher standards.

Bush was a poor president, but he became extremely popular (up to a 90% favorability rating) for a time after 911 because the country had confidence that he could handle a crisis.   Trump got a very little boost early in this crisis but remained under 50% because people have no confidence that he can handle a crisis.  It's really remarkable how little he has gained at a time when you would expect people to back the president.

I'd imagine that my good buddy ROMAD probably thought I'd be infuriated....  I definitely think he handled the outbreaks during his presidency much better than this jerk.

I've always thought "unnecessary deaths" was a half decent barometer for presidential unawesomeness, and Bush is still pretty high on that count compared to other recent presidents.

I wasn't infuriated. I have learned never to underestimate the Republican party. When I said it couldn't get worse than Bush, the RNC said hold my beer and gave us Donald Trump.

The biggest difference with Bush is you can’t really deny that he actually cares about people and wanted to do what’s right for them and the country. Motives couldn’t be questioned.  With Trump the only consideration is how it affects him personally.

Heretofore I've still considered W to be a worse president but the Coronavirus is making it a much closer race.   The other thing about Trump though is that I think his crappiness is more existential - I think the stuff he's doing may not fully materialize for a while.

This will infuriate a certain segment of this board.  I know for a fact that he was very much engaged in reviewing the threat and mitigation documents I sent his way.

Bush was still the model for Trump in the way he filled the bureaucracy around him with incompetent ideological hacks (well in Trump's case less ideological than cult of personality, but the same incompetence). Which is why even if his personal ethics and sense of responsibility to his job were far and away better than Trump's,  his results - not so much.

Donald Trump had it made. He inherited a roaring economy and no major conflict abroad. All he had to do was not screw it up and he managed to do that. Bush had 9/11 within his first year on the job. At least Bush didn't go on a Muslim ban to every country but the ones that actually supplied the hijackers.

I’m concerned from the call for retired healthcare workers to come back to the workforce to help.

I appreciate their selflessness in that many probably do want to assist but I think it’s a tremendously irresponsible ask from politicians when we don’t have the proper PPE to protect them.    Seems very dangerous with good chance of doing more harm than good.

good work on things like coordinating laid off medical staff (eg nurses) where ORs are shut down to the hot spots. The Org he is working with seems to realize that this is going to be rolling series of regional crises, and getting organized to move people and resources from point A to point B to follow it will be a major service.

Most human beings care about other people at least a little bit.  Trump has never shown evidence that he cares  about anyone beyond himself.  That is his whole problem and why he is not fit to be a leader.

One small ray of sunshine in all this is my neighborhood, and I'd imagine happening across the country.  Even strangers or bare acquaintances are looking out for each other.   Both my mom (next door) and I have had various younger neighbors check on us, asking if we need anything.  (We don't, but it's nice they are doing it.). On next-door, which is an infuriating place at times, when someone puts out a call for some needed item, someone else invariably is able to share with them and/or tell them who has it in stock.  People with backyard chickens are delivering eggs (for free) to the porch of elderly and shut ins.  Many stories like that.

So are the retired people who are taking the cruises.  I felt really bad for the passengers on that first ship.  Not as much for the subsequent ones who traveled AFTER that.  (A little, maybe, but geez.  At some point people need to use their own common sense and these were old enough to know better.)

It's supposed to be against the law in the US to practice medicine without a license.
