Wil Myers, the Boston and San Diego trade talks

Recommended Posts

Crazy idea but the unending talks between San Diego and Boston, where San Diego wants to offload Wil Myers and as much of his $66 Million owed over 3 years as possible, with Boston scooping up very good prospects from the Padres farm system has me thinking. Who do you think Boston would prefer? Wil Myers or Miguel Cabrera? Cabrera is owed $124 Million over 4 years, 2020-2023. If Detroit sent Cabrera to Boston, and San Diego sent Myers to the Tigers, the Tigers, not the Red Sox would be the team to pick up a negotiated portion of the salary difference, sending that to the Red Sox, rather than the Red Sox sending it to the Padres. Additionally, Detroit would be in a position to scoop up some prime Padres prospects and even perhaps a capable big-leaguer, and maybe even one or two prospects from Boston, or another club if the deal worked better as a 3-way.  The Padres farm system is loaded, including position players, an area the Tigers are weak in, in the minors, and pitching. Essentially it would mean saying goodbye to a Tiger legend, and we'd be spending the money on the financial obligation difference to buy prospects who might actually help us win, in a time frame better aligned with winning window we hope to meet. That is something neither Cabrera nor Myers will help us do. I understand Cabrera is a Detroit legend and everything about that. But depending on the $ commitment and the return, this is something I'd consider. Not because it will make a difference in 2020. It won't. But because it might in 2021 and it might even more in 2022, 2023 and beyond. Those are the years that matter.

You’d have to package Mize and Paredes to offload Cabby’s contract.  Not what a rebuilding team should do.

Isn't Boston in luxury tax ****? Didn't they just throw in David Price to the Mookie Betts trade just to offload salary? Why would they then want Cabrera's albatross contract? The Red Sox already have JD Martinez at DH. Where does Cabrera fit in?

boston just trades one of the best players in baseball and david price to shed salary.  why the **** would they take $30 million of dead weight in cabrera's contract?

and they already have better players at his position that make less money.

come on man.
