2020 NBA Trade Deadline

Something else regarding the Lakers.

Word is Darren Collison wants to come out of retirement and play again.  The Lakers are rumored to be one of the teams he is considering but he wants to wait until after the trade deadline to come back.  So maybe LA has received word they are his pick.

Good point. The Lakers are also going to be at the top of the list for guys who are bought out.

The Grizzlies are right there in the playoff chase too.  Even if they lose in the first round just having their youngsters play in that type of environment could be beneficial. Not to mention I think the if they can somehow get to the 6 seed I think they have enough talent to give Utah problems.

Memphis doesn't have their draft pick this year (Boston has it).  There are no protections on it so you can't even use the argument of missing the playoffs to add another piece.

I couldn't figure out why Memphis was trading away picks.  But this trade was from 2015.  They basically traded it for Jeff Green.

Another reason Drummond might opt in.

I doubt teams view salaries as hard dollar amounts.  They probably view them as percentages of the cap.  If they value a player at X% of the cap and the cap goes down, its a smaller overall contract for that player.  Might be wise to opt in and wait and see if the cap goes back up in 2021.

Some discussion about Kennard and his upcoming free agency in 2021.  I think he is eligible for an extension starting this summer.

Strategic Planning Session: The Athletic analysts examine the Pistons roster, analyze potential trades

Quote

What do you guys think a reasonable number is for Kennard?

Partnow: Guards/wings who can shoot and handle are always going to be in demand. My guess is Kennard is going to look at the deals Malcolm Brogdon and Bojan Bogdanovic got last year and want something comparable, in the four-year/$80M range. As you intimate, there’s no good reason for Detroit to agree to that kind of extension. If that’s where Kennard ends up after hitting the market as an RFA in the summer of 2021, it’s on the high side, but so be it. But, by signing that sort of extension a year early, Detroit is not only foregoing the use of the space provided by Kennard’s manageable $15.8 million cap hold for 2021, but also assuming all the risk of injuries or decline in effectiveness.

Would Kennard go for something like that 4/$60M you suggest, perhaps with a player option on the last year to balance the risks and upside for both player and team? We can’t know his calculus and risk preferences, but I don’t think there is a lot of precedent for a starting-caliber shooting guard taking that kind of deal without testing the market first.

So the cap will go up from this year.  But not as much as projected.  Hopefully we get some numbers soon.

Not a big deal at all.

Pistons will have roughly $13M in space if Drummond opts in.  Actually it will be under $10M because of their draft pick.

Hmmm.  Just realized Snell and Morris both have player options this summer.

Snell will probably opt in since nobody is paying that bum $12M a year.

Morris might be different.  His option is only $3.3M and he can probably get that, or at least close to it, and upgrade his team.

Rod Beard with an article this morning saying there is a "good chance" Luke Kennard gets moved at the deadline. Given the tendinitis and large contract he may be in for, I could see the Pistons wanting to move him for asset(s).

But those better be good assets.  Luke could be an incredible fit for a contending team if healthy.

Can Luke even pass a physical in the next week?

I think a trade in the summer seems more likely for Kennard.

Same. Let him come back healthy and show his value again. My guess is you would get a better return over the summer/into next season if he does that.

I saw that and it took me by surprise as well. I believe he also said that Luke could be added as a sweetener in a bigger deal. That seems far fetched to me that Kennard would be a sweetener and not a main piece.

He also said that Drummond has a "high" probability of being dealt. I just don't see it. The Pistons are apparently pushing for a 1st and the rumor is really dry for Drummond as per Woj Bomb. I'd be surprised if he's traded unless they just want to dump him at any cost.

They were pushing for a 1st a few weeks ago when the rumors came out, as they should. They may have a better idea where the market stands and move him for whatever they can at this point.

I saw a rumor a couple of days ago that the Pistons really want a 1st for Drummond. Whether or not that's their line in the sand is up for debate but it does seem like that's the price they're setting for him or at least hoping for. I'm not convinced that they want to dump him for minimal or no value.

Of course they want a 1st. But when the clock is ticking down they might accept the 2nd(s).

There is absolutely no reason not to ask for a 1st right now.  The Pistons are smart to ask for that and not trade him for less, yet.  As they deadline approaches I bet they become more and more willing to take a lot less.

Will they even get offered a 2nd? The insiders keep touting that there's virtually no market for Andre.

I'm not blaming them for asking for a 1st as they should but I'm just wondering if they're wiling to trade him just for the sake of trading him if they get offered only an expiring for example or if they will only trade him if they get the value they desire?

Personally, I think he needs to go at any cost. They need to move on and more importantly, avoid the potential of an opt in. His head is clearly elsewhere at this point as well, it's best for both parties to make a clean break.

We would need to figure out why there is no market.

Is there no market because nobody wants Drummond at any cost?  Certainly a possibility.

Or is there no market at the current asking price?  Seems a bit more likely.

James Edwards in the Athletic:  "I am 100% certain Detroit is interested in rebuilding"

This should put some of you to rest with the "Gores will never EVER rebuild" comments.

Inside Pass: The Jrue Holiday trade market, plus more NBA notes

Would love to hear those phone conversations.

Probably very reasonable, as that is how any  negotiation works.

Start at asking for lottery level picks, and see where you end up. I'd expect any 1st round pick to be a good deal for Rose.
