November Regular season game thread

Recommended Posts

Zadina is heating up in GR...had another two points tonight including his 5th goal  the last seven games.  I think the trade bit floated by Pierre last week woke him up maybe...

Cholowski looks miles better this year. I could see him as a quality second pairing guy.

If Cherry had simply said more people in Canada need to show respect for the veterans who sacrificed he would have been fine.  In today's culture...especially in Canada...you can't single out classes of people and expect to stay on TV

I'd like to see a poll of Chinese -Canadians as to what they find more offensive: a) Cherry's comments on Saturday; or b) the fact that Hockey Night in Canada is sponsored by Huawei!  Basically an arm of the Communist Party of China. While protests rage in HK. While China tries to bully Canada regarding the extradition case of Huawei's Meng. While 2 Canadians are being held hostage in China. Yeah, so much for NHL/Rogers/Sportsnet values.

problem is that wouldn't be enough for Columbus. You'd probably have to add Seider to that.

no thanks.

Technically he is.

I didn't say he was efficient. I don't know how he was played previously... maybe lots of ST's = low amount of faceoffs?

I think the amount of faceoffs he’s taken shows neither the blues or wings view him as a center.  He’s averaging 29~ish faceoffs a season, and Mantha took 50 draws just last season.  I haven’t watched all of his minutes on the wings but he’s always been a winger from what I’ve seen.

I do think he’s shown his skill, and I’m loving this trade.

And TBF, the sale of poppies by VFWs etc is a left over World War ONE tradition. How many Canadians either born there or immigrated have much familiarity with it? My parents were VFW, so I know about it, but I doubt many of my boomer friends know much about let alone the 60%-70% of the native born north American population born since I was. It's just an odd hill to plant your flag on in terms of patriotism.

The accumulated experiences as you get older can broaden your perspective of the world, but there is a powerful tendency as we age for the circle of our concerns to close back in on the most near and familiar, almost the inverse of the way an infant's perspective of the world grows outward. If you don't fight that you end up like Cherry.

In fairness to Cherry, he did say yesterday that he was wrong to say "you people" and should have said "everyone."

It's not unfair to think people should remember the sacrifices people made in the not so distant past.  But it is an odd hill to die on.  And I don't think he should have been fired over it, but he may have told management to eff off when they asked him to clarify his statements.

It was long rumored Cherry would not be offered a contract for this season.  I think it is very likely he had very little support within Sportsnet and he was told he couldn't make any more controversial statements.  I also strongly suspect he was been given several 'last' chances over the years.

At some point, it shouldn't be surprising it cost him in the end, as these things tend to go.

The cynic in me thinks that Sportsnet did not want to hire him this season, but feared the backlash if they let him go in the offseason, so they basically are using this 'controversy' as an excuse to fire him with cause so as to minimize backlash. In other words, they gave him the rope to hang himself.

LOL, a strategy I have seen more than one organization put its hopes in.

I think Biggs' read is bang on.

Sportsnet has got rid of expensive names recently like Bob Cole, Nick Kypreos and Doug McLean.  A few years ago it looked like Ron McLean was out too, until a public backlash. Cherry has long been Teflon Don and while it may be odd that Saturday's segment is what got him fired, saying he has said 20 other more offensive things in the past isn't much of a defense.

Interestingly, Coach's Corner is a taped segment (typically done right near the end of the 1st period for intermission airings) and it aired 3 different times in the space of 10 minutes as the Leafs, Habs and Sens got to intermission at different times. Sportsnet had ample chance to pull it. And according to Cherry, they didn't say anything to him before he left Saturday.

I will say that some of the people taking glee in Cherry's firing and calling him a garbage human being seem like pretty miserable lowlifes themselves, but that's always the case if one dares read Twitter or YouTube comments on virtually any topic these days.

So Fabbri now has 4 points in 3 games and has been key to this short winning streak, IMO, by adding a secondary offensive beyond the 1st line. How about Perlini? I haven't really noticed him but some of him impressed. I'll focus on him more next game.

So at 20 games in we're pretty much at the 1/4 mark of the 82-game season

https://www.nhl.com/redwings/stats

- Mantha and Bertuzzi are nearly PPG players

- Larkin is on 60 pt pace and while not as dominant as last year I think he's fine and will have a good season

- AA got off to a weak start, not just his stats line but also being almost invisible the first 10 games, but has shown signs of life the past couple of weeks

- Wings have 7 players who have yet to pick up a point! Frans Nielsen is trying to outdo Riley Sheahan. 0G 0A through 16 GP.

I saw it happen to an engineer some 15 years ago.

He was a dead man walking and didn't know it.  First minor slip up (a slip up that wasn't even his fault, incidentally), boom, gone.  Those without the inside info couldn't believe the suddenness or finality of it.

They didn't know, it wasn't a matter of if, just when.

-AA is a -22(!)

I know +/- is a garbage stat, but holy ****.

Any chance we can move the Cherry talk out of the Wings' regular season game thread?

Have taken the batch of Cherry posts from Monday through this morning and copied them into the NHL Discussion thread.

So at the 1/4 mark of the season, the Wings and Leafs both have only 6 regulation wins in 20 games.

Leafs have 8 ROWs compared to the Wings' 7, but perhaps the Wings can pull even tomorrow night vs LA Kings.

I would take you up on it but I don’t live there anymore.   I’m back in the cold.

Tickets should be easy to get and there will be plenty of Wings fans in the building.

After all, the Wings have the top winning percentage in Detroit these days (gulp)!

Wings -7 wins in 20 games; 35%

Lions - 3 wins in 9 games; 33.3%

Pistons -4 wins in 12 games; 33.3%

Tigers - 47 wins in 161 games; 29.2%
