At Eagles Pre-game chatter

Are we watching the same games?  Better in the 2nd half?  We are 9th in first half scoring and 26th in 2nd half points scored.

The defense has been a little better in the first half.

I was referring to the Eagles in this situation.

10 wins in the NFC may not be enough. I think all four teams in the NFC North are capable of winning 10 games. You have Seattle and Los Angeles out west that are capable of 10 or more wins. It may be hard to make the playoffs.

It would be pretty remarkable if all 4 teams end up with 10 wins.

Not saying it isn't possible, but the division is guaranteed at least 12 non wins due to division play, and 4 teams at 10-6 have 24 losses total.

The Lions should win either way but it looks like Saquon Barkley will be out for next months game against the Giants.

I didn't necessarily mean all 4 would win 10 games, but they are all good enough to win 10 games and probably multiple teams in the division will win 10 or more. It's not too inconceivable though. All teams could go 1-1 against each other. That means they would need to go 7-3 or better in non-division games.

The first half decision to not use time outs when there was like 50 seconds left and you had 2 to use sucks.  They were on their own 40 yard line or something.

Playing not to lose

Not playing to win....this IS a difference....a HUGE difference.

You rarely see the Patriots standing pat with a 10 point lead...they do not even stand pat with a 20 point lead...keep going at them.

We won, in the end that's all that matters.

It was Philly's ball. Call time out for them????20190923_155727.jpg.de8f6bd687d2049ef672527a2f7d2f9b.jpg

Everybody is talking about how great the division but in reality, the teams they've beaten outside of the division are the Falcons, Raiders, Redskins, Broncos twice, Chargers and Eagles so it's too early to say that it's the best division in football.

Ironically, the Lions beat the best two teams and are getting the least respect by a significant margin. Not overly surprising considering that they didn't look great in the victories and it's the Lions but still...

That's probably it. They’re not dominating or beating anyone convincingly – even bad teams (and Arizona is pretty bad). This team would certainly beat the Dolphins, but based on the way they’ve been playing they’d likely struggle doing it.

I've always been a fan of Parcell's quote: You are what your record says you are. Many focus on how bad they've looked so far (rightly so I suppose), but there are also reasons why they haven't lost yet, reasons worth highlighting

Chicago was a ridiculous roughing the passer call from being 1-2 and losing to a bad Denver team. Every team has looked bad at some point. Did you see how bad Cousins looked against Green Bay?

Green Bay and Chicago haven't won convincingly either against worse teams. If all else is fairly equal which it has been in this division, the Lions will always get the least respect until the SOL moniker goes away. Based on performance, I don't see what makes them clearly worse than the other three.

True, I'm just saying you're probably right about why NFL pundits/analysts are still skeptical of this team. It's the way they've been playing, and it's because they're the Detroit Lions. I'd say more the latter

The Lions don't really have that one superstar player or hot shot young skill position player that the outsiders and pundits go crazy for.

For a lack of a better term they just aren't that sexy of team so it's gonna take them longer to get noticed by the national media.

Also I don't buy the "it's the Lions" excuse cause the Browns were the media darlings coming into the year and their track record isn't a whole lot better than the Lions but they had the young flavor of the month QB to go along with the superstar WR Odell Beckham, a couple of things that the media clamor for.

In fact come to think of it they kinda remind me of the 2011 Lions when Stafford was that young QB to go along with the superstar WR, game changing defender (Suh for us and Garrett for them) and young promising RB(Best and Chubb).   I don't think we got as much love as they did before the season but I do seem to remember us getting alot of notoriety after the first few games of the season.

You are smart enough to know why someone would think about calling a time out there.  You can disagree with it, but you are not calling it "for them".

Philly only had 1 timeout left at this point.  If you call one here then that is calling it for them.  You make them use their last timeout here to severely limit their use of the middle of the field.

Folks were complaining about this at the time. I rewound my DVR and it was 3rd down and 13 yards to go for Philly. Does any Lion fan really want to call time out to give the Eagles a chance for a hail mary? I agree, our coaches stink but I can't blame them for not calling time out to give Philly a chance for a miracle play, we've seen that movie before.

I suspect this is one of those things were you just can win...

  • If you take the time out, stop the Eagles, you might get a little credit for doing.
  • If you don't take the timeout and don't stop the Eagles on 3rd down, you might get a little credit for doing the smart thing.
  • If you take the TO and the Eagles convert on 3rd down, you'll get lambasted for being in over your head: "Who takes a TO to help the opposing team?  Clearly Patricia has no clue when to use TO.  He has no business being a HC."
  • If you don't take the TO and stop the Eagles, you get criticized for the mistake. "Patricia is just too conservative... he doesn't know how to win... he doesn't know how to put a team away."

For the record, I do think that Patricia does get conservative too soon in a game.  He does need to learn how to finish a game and put a team away.  But I don't think not taking the TO in this game is evidence of that.

I suspect we've all had more than a few times where we overreacted to a Lions screw up... we're just lucky enough it wasn't caught on video.
