2019-2020 OFFSEASON DISCUSSION THREAD

Recommended Posts

Okay, My original intent was to inquire of  this community what replacement the Tigers might use for Erie, given that franchise has been earmarked for elimination.  Knowing the wrath thrown here in the past by control-obsessed haters of new threads, I thought I'd better dig around to see if the subject had already been touched upon. That is how your comment from so long ago fell into my cross hairs....digging back to the date of the NYT article.  And remembering that I personally  had used the comment "drink the kool-aid"* a while back, got me to wondering if my use may have inspired your commentary? That is where this all originated.

So, you can plainly see that the "new thread loathing" nature by some of the more outspoken (and offensive) regulars of this forum is clearly the main culprit behind this regrettable exchange. Perhaps in a more tolerant environment none of this would have happened? :D

All that said, I know from personal experiences with minor league club administrators that cutting down costs related to travel is a prime instigator in the shrinking of the MinLB. So West Michigan isn't going to get an AA club...take that to the bank.

Where do you, oblong, think a replacement for Erie will be located?

I was not thinking of anyone when I mentioned my opinion.  Like I said it doesn’t offend me. If it is used I would only bring it up as a point of reference, if at all.  Not to scold.   The discussion at that point was over things people say that are offensive to some but there’s no intent to do so. That’s why I brought it up.

I don’t use the term “grandfathered” anymore either

Doesn't really surprise me, some evidently are just predetermined to see the negative side of any given situation.....or intent.

Some interesting names for the Tigers:

Cj Cron

Domingo Santana

Cesar Hernandez

Jose Peraza

There's more, but those are a few that jump out at me.

Travis Shaw and Addison Russel both have 2 years of control left, like Fiers did when he came over from Houston.

To me is makes sense to look at those guys. Not sure they want to deal with Russel's DV issues though.

I haven't followed Shaw but that seems a strange one. He had a bad year with the bat after a wrist injury last season - it there something permanently wrong? If his health is OK he looks like steal. 850 OPS over 1200 PA prior to last season doesn't strike me as a likely fluke.

CJ Cron can mash in smaller parks.  I wonder if he can mash in Detroit?

Edit:  I was thinking about his brother Kevin.  CJ can mash, too.

Russell never developed with the Cubs.  He might be worth taking a flyer on for an organization devoid of talent like the Tigers.  See if he can turn it around.  As for the DV ****, well, I think your private life is your own business and one accusation - cause that's all it was, an accusation - should not preclude you from working in your profession.  But I'm sure the woker than thou crowd will want to make Russell be a homeless vagrant because of it.

Yes, there are some players here that hopefully the Tigs can take advantage of. Maybe 2 year deals with an option? Seems the no. of overall FAs (in areas of need) should allow the Tigs to have a chance at a couple...

I’m just here to be the spark that lights the flame that engulfs the board in weeks of discussion about what is and isn’t offensive.

Theo did a good job of threading the needle with him and was still criticized

not sure Al could manage it correctly

Shaw is another good one if he's healthy.

Peraza has 3 years of control left, so he could be more than a one year plugin

The flip side of this is that the Cubs have been lousy with middle infield options for a while so Russell was already considered expendable. The Tigers aren't exactly set anywhere on the infield. Cubs fans were relieved to see Russell go in part because he was superfluous. If it were Anthony Rizzo going through the same thing Russell did, they might be a bit more ambivalent about it.

That said, I doubt Ilitch would risk the black eye of picking up Russell. Ilitch has got things he's trying to accomplish in downtown Detroit and there's too much noise around Russell that might distract from that. I don't think Ilitch is focused on improving the team on the field enough to take that chance.

This front office's recent track record on 2-year free agent deals to is not exactly stellar.

I don't think it would matter either... wouldnt even be a blip on the radar.

The Tigers are barely a blip on Chris Ilitch's own radar.

In any event, of course I don't think people or the city would stop doing business with Ilitch altogether over it, but I also don't think it would be literally nothing. It would be news, it would be negative for the team, and the team is owned by Ilitch, so he'd be associated with the move in people's minds. Ricketts was criticized for keeping him so I don't see how Ilitch would escape criticism entirely. There's probably no way to know because we almost certainly won't sign Russell.

He's got enough bad press with their lack of development despite the promise and being a slumlord.  If they didn't want to sign him for PR reasons it would be exclusive to the Tigers PR issues but not in line with his overall PR battles.  The Ilitchs overall have a bad name in Detroit now.
