Small sample size so obviously could just be a fluke but that is a pretty damn big difference.

Hot take is hot!

What does Dieter Kurtenbach make of Jose Altuve's 2017 regular season splits?

  • Home: .834
  • Away: 1.081

And who the **** is Dieter Kurtenbach, anyway?

This is a good sign. A good team actually wanted a guy (Matt Hall) who wasn't good enough for our 40 man anymore. It's not much, but it's a step.

Matt Hall has elite curve ball spin and better than average fastball spin, although lower than average velocity. Maybe it's just the Tigers don't know what to do with that.

I'm sure it was a late round flyer that had no intention of signing but I can't believe this is the first that I'm hearing of this.  Please tell me I'm not the only one that didn't know this.

You were the next to last one to hear it.

Season splits? That's a much bigger sample size than just a playoff series. Question for the folks who really know their stats; is this a significant difference?

Hee-Hee...I love Google;

Dieter Kurtenbach is a contributor for The Athletic. Previously, he was a Senior Writer and columnist for FoxSports.com and the lead columnist at KNBR.com.

I meant the question in the context of, "Why should we care what this guy has to say about this subject?"

This is how I see it.  I get why people don't like him, but I get along with him.  He is pretty knowledgeable, although no more so than a lot of others I follow.  Like you  said, he is too negative, but entertaining.  He is kind like an obnoxious talk radio guy, except a little smarter.

Maybe I have the facts wrong, but he always seemed to imply that he had credentials as a scout. He was a spirited debater, to say the least. And brusque.

Does anybody not work for the Athletic?  It seems as if everyone who gets laid off or fired ends up working for The Athletic.

He faced about 4 batters for A&M, and walked three of them. It was a deep reach, and there's a good story about it at BA

they do for now.

but the athletic will eventually need to make a profit when they run out of seed money.  then they'll all be out of work again.

They had a nice hedge fun paying for all the long time guys that were laid off from newspapers. That was all to get them off the ground but their model isn't working.

They said a monthly subscription, with no ads. But, are now looking into the ads so what's the point.

Many of their sites offer no more than a newspaper or whatever where you get more content for the same price. Really no athletic guys are giving you some indepth look that you can't find anywhere else.

They shoot themselves in the foot. For example, recently the pittsburgh one had an exclusive about the GM getting fired. But, the writer tweeted it with the tweet of "pirates fire their GM." So you didn't need to click or have a susbcription to get the news. And within 5 minutes everyone, espn, pittsburgh post, etc, had it or just did stories attributing it to the athletic...so what's the point of having  a subscripition.

I agree.  With Twitter now, there's really no such thing as "exclusive" news.  So someone knew about it 10 minutes before I did.  So what?

I never understood the Athletics's reasoning for being subscription based.  Did they really think that people hate ads that much that they were willing to spend money not to see them?  And to read news that everyone else was going to get within a day or two?  It was a model that I thought never was going to work.

According to Father Yoda of The Athletic, no. Details at The Athletic. The Athletic.

It really pisses me off when Rothenthal reports something, something that he's obtained by building a career's worth of resources, and they make him report "The Athletic has learned that..."  No, you did that on your own bro and I wish they didn't make you say stupid things like that.

I agree with you guys on the Breaking News issue but I’ve found the content on The Athletic to be easily worth $48 year.

I subscribed 2 year ago when it was on a special, like $20, forgot to cancel the renewal.... My intent was to use that to follow the Wings and Pistons more than I do now... they do have a lot of content and local coverage, more than the freep or detnews... at least better people.  I can't stand McCosky.   But I just don't read it unless I see a tweet that refers me to something.  When I want an update on the Pistons or Wings I just look at the threads here to be honest....

Same. I never go there in search of content. But I see plenty of things linked or referenced on twitter, and more often than not it was worth the read when I click on it.

And I do think being able to just read an article without an intrusive advertisement is worth something.

Good timing, my phone just sent me this news notification as I read this

"

  • With this investment, the company has raised a total of $139.5 million since its launch in 2016 and is valued at roughly $500 million after the new raise, according to sources familiar with the deal.

Why it matters: The Athletic is considered an anomaly in digital media upstarts because it's focused on subscription revenue rather than advertising revenue. Investors say they remain bullish on the company's ability to keep growing, because it's been able to grow its subscriber base quickly, especially overseas, while retaining existing customers."

The Athletic was never intended to be breaking news. The Athletic is columns. It's for people who want in-depth coverage of sports, teams, players and issues, and the Athletic delivers on that promise. Whether the Athletic is actually good enough to pay for is up to the reader to decide, and it's reasonable to say you simply don't like it. But it's not realistic to criticize it for not being a breaking news source, because they never were going to be that anyway.

I subscribed to the Athletic for a couple of months and I think I read two articles and I only read them because I saw a link.  There is too much free info out there for me to get a subscription to anything.
