Must suck to have made the majors and only have 1 walk to show for your entire career.

His walk-up song was ‘Sex Machine’ by Sly and the Family Stone.

Got to be one of the pitchers.  Luis Tiant or Sudden Sam McDowell

Probably Travis Fryman.

Could be Francisco Lindor, especially if/when he signs on with Detroit to push them over the top from rebuild to winning team.

Shout out to Bill Laskey who grew up in the same 'hood and pitched 24 innings for Cleveland in 1988.  He pitched for the high school team that played their games caddy corner from my house.  We would go over and watch their games on the ramshackle diamond.  There was just an old wire backstop (the kind with an occasional hole that was just patched up with more wire), two rickety benches on either foul line for "dugouts", no outfield fence.  Real primitive home field.  I probably saw Tom Marsh play home games there, but never would have known he would squeeze out a few seasons in the bigs.  It was a treat for us if there was enough chalk left over from the foul lines and batters boxes for us to use the next day.  Good times, man.

Indians vs Tigers

 Game 129

39-89

Remember him?

Wayne Redmond

Years with Detroit: 1965, 69

Tigers highlights: A walk

You may remember him from: Toledo Mud Hens, Shreveport Captains, from the same town as Phillip Rivers

He made it to the bigs, and that's good.  But the path was weird.  Debut at 19 despite not showing too much in the minors.  Kicked around a bit until another cup of coffee at 23.  Pretty much a AAA player until he was done at 28.

I refuse to classify Travis Fryman as a Indian.

I hated that trade.  But the Tigers had to give something up to get Gabe Alvarez.

Sudden Sam McDowell

Gaylord Perry.  We were supposed to hate him, but I was amused by his act.

Spoiler Alert:. Wayne was not the next Willie Mays.

And Kirk Gibson wasn't the next Mickey Mantle.

But Wayne was black and Kirk was white, so they at least they got that part of the comparison right.

True enough, although there is considerable cognitive dissonance created when a black man is named Wayne.

Steve Hargan grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and every time he pitched it was front-page news in the sports section of the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette. He went to South HS. Another famous alumni of South is Shelley Long who played Diane Chambers on Cheers.

I actually do remember Wayne Redmond. I had a package of glossy black-and-white photographs of guys on the 40-man roster when I was a kid and he was one of them. After his breakout 36 homer season in the minors when he was 19 years old I kept waiting for the Wayne Redmond era to begin. Sadly, it didn’t.
