I’m coming to Detroit Aug. 2-5

Recommended Posts

Does anyone want to hang out and be nice to me? This will be the first time I’ve been to Detroit since 1988.

If anyone would like to show me the sites and/or act as a guide of sorts I’d be happy. I would even accept housing arrangements although I am prepared to purchase a reasonable hotel room if there is such a thing.

I’m on a long cross country drive.  I will arrive on Friday the 2nd and leave early Tuesday the 6th for a 12 1/2 hour drive to Vermont.  I drove 10 hours to get from Kansas City to Lake Tippecanoe in Indiana today.

I’m planning on seeing the game with the White Sox on Monday the 5th.  I haven’t bought any tickets because I don’t expect it to be a problem to get one.

I would be happy to meet somewhere with a group of people if that were possible too.

Even though we’ve known each other for 15 years you don’t really know me; although I can attest to the fact that I am clean and observe the common decencies of normal human conduct.

It’s too bad my timeframe doesn’t coincide with a long homestand but maybe one game is all I can take.

Be prepared to take pictures of me at various landmarks because my vast vanity demands it.  As you know I like pictures. I’m like a Japanese tourist that wants proof that I was there.

This is a picture a friend of mine took of me in Kansas City yesterday.

Message me or whatever works for you.  I know this is a time of year when a lot of people are gone so it’s not going to be easy but I’d really love to meet as many of you as I can.

You bet.  I’m not assuming this will be easy but this was the time I could come even though I knew a lot of people would be gone.

Is that a compliment or a criticism?

Bert where are you staying?

I don’t really know yet.  Not knowing the place that well I’m not sure if I’m better served by staying in Detroit proper or in one of the many surrounding communities.  As my travels have evolved only in the last day or so have I been able to nail down the dates when I would be in the Detroit area. No one has ever accused me of being a master tactician so I’m sort of flying by the seat of my pants here.

I can take a picture of you by the Auburn Drive-In.

I will be in Auburn later this week for a day.  You are definitely on my itinerary David! I’m in Lafayette today.  I’ll message you later today.

As in life, the question of where to stay...'depends'.

If you want the full on downtown Detroit experience (and you may want that as a LOT has changed since 1988) then you may consider The Hilton Garden Inn which is walking distance to the park...so on those restless nights you can wander on over to the park and take a stroll around it or something.

If you want something a little more boogie you may consider the Westin book which is also within walking distance of the park and also in a more traveled area.  There is also the Mariot in the Ren Cen, but a little more of a walk.

If you plan on hitting a casino my recommendation for the best experience will probably be MGM.  Greektown is best situated though and used to be my main spot 10-15 years ago.

You are driving so you will have a car I assume...you could stay in Royal Oak and drive downtown.  I like Royal Oak, it is pretentious as ****, but they have some good restaurants and it is a good city to walk around in.

I am a fan of Dearborn and there is plenty to do there as well.  I would recommend the Hampton Inn on Michigan Ave and Military, it is pretty new and right in the middle of the 'strip' for Dearborn.  Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village are close by as well.  You could easily spend an entire day in each.  Plenty of places to eat within walking distance.

I could offer a million and 1 things to do while in the city itself or in the surrounding suburbs.  Feel free to PM me with any questions and I will be glad to help out.

May I suggest we have a meet-up on Saturday night somewhere for interested parties?

First round on me.

With this being the case then I suggest the meet up be at the Bad Luck Bar for an opening round of Admirals.

one caveat on Dearborn is that weekend is our homecoming festival so hotel rates might be on the higher side but any one on Michigan Ave west of Southfield is a good choice and you are only minutes from downtown and close to The Henry Ford Museum if that's your thing.

Because of that festival I may not be around Sat or Sunday, depends on what the boss wants us doing.

I really would love to just pick you up and drive you around myself.  My special needs son loves going to Detroit so that's something we do at least once a week.  I'm just not sure on our timings.

Dang it Bert, couldn't you have picked a better time? ;)

As much as I would love to hang out with my favorite Commie, prior commitments forbid it.

Only a bougie person would recognize that.

I probably classify more as a bobo, but point taken.

Exercise caution, Motown Sports members.  This guy looks pretty sketchy to me.
