2020 MLB Draft

Recommended Posts

Whitey Herzog had a good Bob Horner story in his book.

Opening day one year, everyone is excited and out on the field early loosening up for the game. Whitey comes into the clubhouse to grab something, and sees Horner sitting by his locker like a "frog on a lilly pad" and asks him why isn't out with the rest of the team. Horner tells him he's tired. Herzog throws his arms up and yells "162 games to go and the man is gassed!"

The biggest decision will be: take Austin Martin for athleticism (including defense/ positional power) and bat (but most likely not the power of Tork), or, is Tork's bat so lethal that it offsets Martin's advantage in other areas...?

That's the point I was basically making (in much less words...). I don't expect him to put up the #'s I was throwing out there...

One season is a long time in the lifetime of these guys. By June they may have self sorted themselves out more clearly.

If Tork is capable of .320+, .400+ OBP, and 45 dingers per year, and can field a competent 1st Base; I have no issues whatsoever drafting him to be our future 1st baseman for the next 10-15 years...

And if he doesn't?

That is one of my favorite books, period.

Martin definitely has the highest ceiling if he can show that he can handle SS but if Tork can mash I don't care that he's only going to be a 1B cause there is a ton of value in that.

Basically if come draft time if Martin and Tork profile to be equal offensively then obviously you take Martin but if Tork profiles as a much superior offensive player I think I'd lean towards him even though he plays a less desirable position there.  I want some impact bats in the system no matter the position.

In Windows 98 terms...Tork seems plug and play....with Martin you have to find the drivers and maybe even do one of those file associations to install him properly

With the way he is performing either Tork really wants to be a Tiger or nobody has told him yet that they have the number 1 pick.  My guess is the latter.

2020 Tork through the first two weekends:

8G; 24AB;  8H; 4 HR; 13BB, 7Ks

who knew that a 35% walk rate would produce such a strangely poor H/K ratio?  :alien:

What kind of speed does Tork have? Has to be a reason fangraphs has him at 50

Remember when if we drafted Riley Greene he projected as a nice bat but we'd best pencil him in at 1B?

The public data sites evaluate these young players based on what they have done which is completely fair, but not all of them have ever had the occasion to do all the things they may be able to. There is probably always a lot more to be learned about a player once a team starts focusing in on one with its full attention and we are not likely to see much of that info.

I thought the defensive questions about him were about whether he could handle CF adequately or if he would be relegated to LF/RF?

I don't understand why Henning would want to subject a hitter like Torkelson to a sham of a field with unfair hitting dimensions like in Detroit.

Tork wants them to make the park bigger just so he can show off   Fans watching him from Adams St are going to collect plenty of souvenirs via his bombs.

Only problem with drafting Torkelson is that there is no alliteration to "Greene & Torkelson",  and  "Riley & Spencer", sounds more like a law firm.
