2020 MLB Draft

Recommended Posts

And to go into further depth, sure the Indians have had a nice run recently. But, it not like they had some amazing run of development. Lindor (high first), Jose Ramierez (International FA) and Shane Biber are their only home grown talent. Everybody else was a trade or sign.

And if we're going back 25 years. Those 90s indians temas routinely had one of the top 5 payrolls. If we look at their world series team of 97, only Thome, Manny (first round), Nagy (first round), Wright (first round) were the homegrown talent and three were first round picks. So not sure how much development -- as you suggest-- they did there either.

You set the paramaters hauss.

anyone know where 'hauss' came from? Closest word is the German 'Haus' = house, but that makes no sense.....

I think it's supposed to be "hoss", as in horse. I believe that became a common refrain, way back when... from Westerns?

You tell me "hoss".

I'll give you that the Indians had hi priced stars in the 90s. My point was to emphasize that building a team with hi priced stars isn't necessarily the best way to build a winner. That in today's game it seems to be teams with a balance of FA, under control players and trades seem to lead the pack. My point about the Indians is that they contend (should have said remained relevant) without hi priced stars and they have done it for several years.

well back in the day, there was 'Hoss' on Bonanza, who was sort of a final authority figure because he was the big guy who nobody else could move. It was not unusual to call someone 'Hoss' when I was a kid based on that, but not 'hauss' that I was ever aware of. 'know your meme' has got nothing. Oh well.

Re: Indians - i think of them as a poor man's StL. Like StL they also refuse to overpay guys and let them walk - but it seems more guys that leave Cleveland still have big years.  (CC, Brantley)

That might be what I'm remembering...

But that was quite a long time ago and my memory is faulty at best...

The first reference was made toward me so I assumed I must have revealed here that I'm 6'7," and took it as hoss. But again, it's Lurch

It comes from Hooks Dauss, or Hauss, as he liked to be called.

You could look it up.

The Tigers will likely take a position player, such as Torkelson or Martin, first overall in this year's draft. Supposing they are first overall next year as well, should they stick with another position player, or take the pitcher, Kumar Rocker?

I want the BPA regardless of position.  If they are really close then I my factor in position but if Kumar or any pitcher for that matter is the de-facto best prospect then I'm taking him.

Tigers picks for 2020 draft after Houston penalty, #1, 38, 63, 73, +30 for each subsequent round.

Assuming no further forfeitures.

Tigers already have 8 first round draft picks among their top 20 prospects ..as well as 3 second rounders and 3 thrid rounders.  Sounds very promising they will now get 4 of the top 73 prospects in June 2020's draft.

Under a 'smoke = fire' scenario and 2918 Red Sox are implicated and just as severely punished (maybe more!) ..no doubt the Red Sox will forfeit draft picks too.  Not sure where they are in the draft sequence.

Larger implication than the pick numbers themselves is the increased bonus pool at each slot through the first ten rounds as a result of moving up.

based on recent precedent, I'd be shocked if they don't lose them.

Using 2019 bonus pool numbers, the difference between pick 39 and 38 was $47k.  Between pick 65 and pick 63 was 51k, and between 75 and 73 was 26k.  Just eyeballing picks after this, it's about 15k for the two position difference in those rounds in total.

Right, so you're talking something in the neighborhood of an extra $200-$250k to play with for the Tigers. That's significant. It gives them additional flexibility in the upper rounds to go get a guy like Meadows again, and it also gives them additional flexibility beyond the 10th round, where they've taken a much different tact the last few years and actually given some money to guys that historically would have gotten peanuts. They're giving guys in the teens and twenties $100k to sign out of college instead of a piddly bonus, and that extra $200k+ can allow them to go a little over the $125k slot beyond round ten to go get a draft-eligible sophomore or a JUCO kid that maybe they didn't have the luxury of doing last year or the year before.

Not saying they'll execute it that way or that it entirely changes their draft execution, but it's not insigificant money to play with in the process.

Also means that 5% you can go over the limit is a bigger 5%. Not an insignificant difference...

And... who is to say Boston is the only other team that gets nabbed. Logan Morrison has already finger pointed the Dodgers and Yankees.

Whenever one player/manager/front office person has been doing something advantageous for more than a year, it is likely that others are doing something similar.

so assuming they lose both we could have 5 picks out of the first 101 if my math is correct. Thats bloody good Al. Get er done !
