The 2020 Presidential Race

No way she would have won.  The Democrats are going the other way and becoming more and more liberal.

She's just done.  There is little place for Susan Collins and her "moderate" Republican politics now.

After a while old politicians just need to retire.

Meanwhile, at 78 years old, Joe Biden is the front runner to be president and the top three Democratic candidates were over 70 years old. I'm not sure Maine is becoming more and more liberal. Maine has an old population and their other senator is an independent.

If she switched parties when Trump became president, she could have voted no on Kavanaugh and wouldn't have had to coddle Trump.

She knows she is going to lose.

The Rs certainly don't feel like she will. They are spending money and she has somewhat of a pulse in polling.

But her chances probably did die tonight, more than any other Senator up for reelection... Maine (at least right now) isn't Trumpy enough collectively, and it's population are not the highly religious types who are well targeted for a conservative SCOTUS push.

Polling suggests otherwise.

That written, she is probably the best R candidate to lose her seat.

Yup.

We'll see.

The last poll had her down 12 and Biden winning big. Biden is going to carry the state so we'll see if Mainers are as willing to split the ballot as they were in 2008. Her approval rating has also plummeted.

Susan Collins is not going to switch parties, no matter how much you think she should think like you do.

I said she should have. It's too late now. I didn't say she should think like me. She should think like the people of Maine.

If McConnell pushes a nominee thru (even during Lame Duck) what’s to stop Democrats (if they control both houses after Jan 1) to go ahead with threats to pack the court by adding two more justices. Or go as far as setting term limits or a retirement age for justices?

Google Paul LePage and let me know how the people of Maine think.

I can't be an worse than she is. She is one of the most unpopular senators in the country.

When was the last time Maine voted for a Republican for the presidency? Susan Collins is literally the only Republican in the federal government from all of New England.

Paul LePage won twice.

Spend some time in Maine and you'll find a lot of poor white working class folks.

He also had one of the worst approval rates in the country and never won with a majority.

My only point is that the state that elected Paul LePage just elected a Democrat and gave her a higher percentage than LePage ever got in two runs.

And won twice.

There is a large constituency in Maine that supports that point of view.  When you combine that with natural, "pro business" and conservative Republicans, you get Maine.  It's the reason why Trump wins a lot of states that have natural moderate tendencies but also have large swaths of working class voters who flocked to Trump.

I expect that to happen. Would be absolutely stunned if it didn't.

It will be seen as a boon to Trump and propel him to a fairly easy victory.

The Senate will not flip.
