If Trump had actually put in the work of being president, he wouldn't' be in this shape.

If he cared about the gravity and responsibility of being president, he wouldn't have ran in the first place.

This is just hater-ade but this thought crossed my mind.  He's basically only listening to the city fathers of Amity Island and nobody else.

back in the early aughts, In deep state grad school where I learned how to make war better, I studied political psychology and he really seems to have some features of malignant narcissism.

To be fair, I totally think his base is a bunch of fake Christians too, so I can understand why he would behave as if they are.

ETA:  To me, the most interesting part of that is that his base was appalled.

Peggy Noonan herownself has a bit of cognitive dissonance.  Its not a bad thing for these people to see something like that and have the scales fall from their eyes.  There had to be dozens if not hundreds of preceding events that one thing or another was the last straw.   The flash bangs on the crowd in front of the Church might have woke up a lot of people.

No weapons of mass destruction for me, FWIW, and it hasn't gotten better with the GOP since then.

I had been skeptical of the WMD claims but thought the argument that the sanctions regime was becoming increasingly untenable did have merit. But I remember it was watching a press conference given by Paul Bremer when the light dawned that we had zero clue.

I was a few years too late.... The Palin thing worried me..... but I was ok with Romney as POTUS.... it really wasn't until early 2016.  However it might have been earlier if Hillary hadn't been the presumed nominee... I didn't want her as POTUS until teh alternative became what it was.

I warmed to Obama his final few years...

now I look back and cant believe how stupid I was.

Hillary would have been her own brand of awful for sure.   But as someone pointed out . . . bad, but it would have been bad within the normal range.  Not this mess.

I was really worried early in 2012 cycle that the bunch of freaks that the GOP had in the primary were untenable and that Romney had to go through too much to win the nom.   Then alas, 2016 showed that the party had been lost to the freaks.

Very odd historical situation, but looking back it's hard to argue that whichever party had won the Presidency in 2016  was going to emerge seriously damaged.

Yes, PJ.  He said that on NPR when he endorsed Hillary.   His wording was "I think she's wrong on everything but she's wrong within normal parameters".

Oddly enough he's got a new book coming out and he did a quick reading of some of it, with an update on all that happened between finishing it and editing it.

TBF, I have a thing against lying.  I ****ing hate lying or duplicity of any kind.

So lying about something as big as WMD was the sort of thing that just hit the right (or wrong) button to press for me for me to say '**** you, I'm out, I'm not about that', and the rest that followed was largely to purely coincidental.

What would F. Scott think now?

He would have to write an A-Gatsby novel. (imGatsby? UnGatsby? A-Gatsby? Anti-Gatsby?)

The opposite of Gatsby's hope and love would be to follow Trump where there is no hope whatsoever... just hatred and lies.
