The 2020 Presidential Race

Recommended Posts

At first I dismissed the effects this Minneapolis riot would have on the election, but it turned out worse than I thought. It may or may not affect Minnesota, but Trump is definitely going to use this ammunition in neighboring Wisconsin and Michigan and everywhere else. He will also revisit the Baltimore and Ferguson riots and the five Dallas officers assassinated. This has also taken the spotlight off of the US reaching 100,000 COVID deaths. The only saving grace is Trump is very likely to screw this up.

He is going to use it, but there is a difference that should be considered in that this is all playing out on *his* watch and that some folks may consider him a feature of this event, not someone who can prevent it from happening or make things better when they do.

His tweet overnight is a perfect example... he'd be better off deescalating, but that's not who he is.

The Baltimore and Ferguson riots happened while Biden was VP and the Dallas assassinations happened under Obama's watch as well. Plus, this happened in a blue state with a blue mayor. I do think it will have an effect, at least in the short term. Biden and the Democrats are going to have to make sure to change the focus.

Understood. I guess I'm of the view that how the current CiC deals with the current crisis and how (or if) he actually helps deescalate the situation may be at least a small consideration for folks. He's not the challenger anymore. He's in charge. This is happening in *his* America.

I totally buy what you're saying but given politics isn't logical, I'm hoping you're right.

That is the one saving grace. Trump will absolutely make this worse. I just feel there was a lot of momentum for Democrats and they lost a lot of credibility now when they talk about unity and chastise Trumpers for protesting state capitals.

The image of protestors celebrating and shooting off fireworks while a police station is totally engulfed in flames is going to be campaign fodder for Trump from now until November. That's what's going to happen in Milwaukee, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia if you elect Biden.

If the Democrats were good at politics, they'd just say, "this is what happened when you elected Trump"

It's counterintuitive, but he's an incumbent. To an extent, if makes the situation worse, I don't see how that would help him

Another thing to think about, Trump is out there on video encouraging police officers to rough people up more.  Even aside from his overnight tweet he made this worse before it even happened.

The counter is, it happened multiple times while Biden was VP and it happened now in a blue state with a radical left wing mayor.

Phillipe Reines says Warren on The New Abnormal Podcast.  He wanted her in 2016 for Hillary.  Dismisses Whitmer due to Husband's boat.

Steve Schmidt says in light of Minneapolis says Kamela Harris or Warren.   African American vote share indicates Harris.

I can't believe Whitmer's husband being douchey on a phone call is a disqualifier and Trump's Ukraine call isn't.

Reines is pushing his candidate on the more prog side.  The boat thing gives him ammo to do so.

This isn't flipping out on acid and having psychological issues like McGovern's choice Eagleton

Ahh, so it was Obama/Biden's fault when Ferguson happened, but the current chaos is someone else's fault.

I question the efficacy of that pitch

Reines dismisses Abrams.   Says that's just a bouquet being thrown and not serious.

Reines says Biden is already more popular with African Americans than any of the potential VP choices would be.

Schmidt describes McCain process was a clusterfu....  Wanted Joe Lieberman

But the Democrats didn't do things to make it worse like Trump has.

Rick Wilson says Stacy Abrams might have the "sizzle" factor that the activists want in the same way that Sarah Palin did.   He was just instigating.  Got everyone to laugh at the comparison.

That's Trump's playbook. I'm not saying it makes logical sense but it's the type of fodder his base likes. Plus it happened in a blue state and Trump never takes responsibility for what happens in blue states.

We may be talking past each other in the sense that I'm less concerned about how his base is taking this and more about moderate suburbanites (who Buddha addressed last night).

The research he referenced is fair, but I think incumbency matters here too; people may expect a CiC to make things better, not worse.

The fact that you had to use the word "may" here really is an indication to me how ****** stuff is right now.  I know exactly why you said may.

Yup.

This is the result of right wing nationalism and terrorism which got Trump elected and which Trump continues to support.

Reines really liked Biden calling Trump a fool.  Thought that was the most effective thing he's done.
