If you have principles, you don't let someone force right wing nuts who are racist and xenophobic into your camp. You reject them.

As I understand it, his original choice was Joe Lieberman, and that was shot down (likely for political reasons.... it would not have been popular with the GOP base to nominate even a moderate Democrat to the job).

In terms of Palin specifically, I do think he had agency in picking her... at least in the times I've heard folks like Steve Schmidt or Mike Murphy or others talk about that process.

You have McCain to thank for bringing the Tea Party to the forefront.

These were the people that gave Trump a platform for his presidency.

For as much as McCain hated Trump, he helped create him by courting those deplorables.

I'm sure he also is on you list for the damage to the USS Forrestal

so the guy who stood up to the Cong for yrs folded like a cheap suit to his own advisors?

McCain needed to match Obama's blackness so he went the female route. Only problem was, there were better female candidates even in Palin's home state.

My memory of this period was that she was a complete unknown until she hit the scene.   Everyone knew her as this wunderkind governor in Alaska.   Poorly vetted hail mary resulting in a pick six.

I would guess the reality is that McCain simply didn't do his own homework on a decision that he should have. Like Mama said - "Never let other people pick your friends for you."

I'll wait for a real response. McCain was actively courting the votes of Trump's base.

My issue with McCain over that was that he did just that.

I still remember Palin's speech after McCain picked her, specifically nod to Hillary's "18 million cracks in the glass ceiling".

In the long run, Palin's impact is cultural, but there were definitely reasons at the time that she was appealing that were less cultural and more about appealing to the PUMAs.

Same here.  She had the background story that makes for a great feel good movie.  Then a year after it comes out you start learning everything including how they are currently living and you're left feeling a bit betrayed.

I would guess McCain felt he needed the right wing nut jobs to support him and saw that Palin could bring them along.

McCain wanted to match the energy that Obama had being the first black presidential candidate. He couldn't pick another older white male so he went with a female and the one he decided on was a disaster.

Kwame is being released apparently. He can appeal to the black vote and was able to see Canada while mayor of Detroit so he's well versed in foreign policy.

The fact that she didn't stay in the political arena is all we need to know.   Someone who wanted to be taken seriously wouldn't be doing reality TV (...ahem...)

But let us agree that 2008 Sarah Palin was a smokeshow.

He wanted to match that energy by picking Leiberman, just couldn't get the republican party to accept it.  What a different world we could've had.

Maybe it is a little of column A, a little of column B ...

I suspect the vast majority of unconventional picks have a number of considerations the person making the decision thinks adds up to a big gain.

Which puts the entire Coleman Young political machine in Trump's corner ...ah well, there goes Michigan.

All in all, McCain was an odd bird. Nobody is perfect but when it came to his Presidential ambitions he could manage pretty large detours around his code of honor.

Like suggesting Obama was a terrorist, than acting like he was Captain Decency by saying "No he isn't an Arab, he is a good guy".

Isn't Kwame being released because of COVID19? Not a Trump decision, so I don't think Kwame will become a Trumper.

Had Trump actually pardoned him, I have no doubt he would be wearing a MAGA Hat. Self-serving.

would he even come back to MI? I thought he had moved somewhere south (Tx or FL?) before he was sentenced.
