If he could play OF at an acceptable level and hit like he did last year...he'd be a perennial all star quality player worthy of a 20 million contract at minimum.  But...neither of those things are true so...Ithrow up my hands, Nick.  WTH is Avila supposed to do with a DH with a 750ish OPS?

Trade him for 2 Top 10 level prospects or be fired for incompetence.

A lot of this comes down to Al Avila opening his stupid mouth and saying nobody wanted to trade for him.

As Brutal said to Delacroix in The Green Mile   "Learn when to shut up"

I like when GMs actually answer questions, as long as they are the right ones to answer.   Al has failed on this big time on a few occasions.

Have the Ilitches ever fired anyone for incompetence?

Perhaps that was due more to palace intrigue than incompetence?

Perhaps. At the same time, DD did an objectively poor job building the 2014 and 2015 teams resulting in the 2015 deadline sell-off. I think you could view that as being fired for incompetence.

You might, although the same regime who were on the same basic philosophical page simply all moved up one slot on the chart.

I don't think it was incompetence with DD.

I have my doubts about that as well. Someone at the top who's fired for incompetence is usually followed by the ouster of several of his top lieutenants and replaced with a new regime bringing in a new way of doing things.

Considering that, I wish DD had been fired for incompetence.

With Ilitch's failing health and the family knowing what was coming there isn't any room for a personality like DD.  The family had no involvement with the Tigers and DD would have overshadowed Chris or anyone else... can't have that.

Those polls required way too much thought.

And were confusing

How many hanging Chad's are there? Do we need to get the supreme court invovled?

I know Chadd isn't the best scouting director.... or whatever he is...but hanging him is a but much.

Yes, that’s true, but the current level of incompetence doesn’t excuse the incompetence of their former leader.

True as well, but if the reason for the firing truly was incompetence, then shouldn't all the other incompetent leadership been shown the door as well?

Literally none of this comes down to that.

Maybe. Maybe not.

if the remaining incompetent leadership was left in place, that suggests that incompetence probably wasn't the issue.

It’s why I’m rooting for a sale of the team.

Yeah...maybe Tom Gores will buy the team.  He's been a wonderful owner for the Pistons.

NOT!!!

Man...I sure love old timey internet cliches

Dan Gilbert was released from the hospital today for the stroke he suffered a few weeks ago. I had hoped the Illitch family would sell the Tigers to him and it was interesting that Gilbert was severing ties with casinos. Gilbert can appear to be somewhat of a nutjob but he is very invested in Detroit, passionate about sports and the city and has been willing to spend huge with the Cavs. I hope he is mending well and I'd still like to see the Illitch's sell him the Tigers

If the leader was incompetent the rest of the team might have been very competent yet simply overruled.
