And the vast, vast majority of bunts are out. More likely to get on base with a traditional base hit. So let's keep trying that instead of chasing fool's gold.

seriously though, the next competitive advantage will be exactly finding players who can play against their trends, because the whole league is committed to retrospective analytics. Players who learn to become flexible enough in their approach can blow up the whole system their opponents rely on. If you refuse to be/are able to be unpredictable, you cannot be predicted.

I think the biggest reason it hasn't already happened is just the rabbit ball. As long as 12 and 13 HR games can happen, teams remain reluctant to worry about anything except hitting the long ball.

It would be nice to see progress from more of the kids but it surprises me sometimes at the levels of disgust and disappointment in this team.   They are what most everyone thought they would be - where's the surprise?

Good question. What I’m about to say has already been said many times but bears repeating. I knew, as did everyone else, the Tigers weren’t good enough to be a threat this year. Not enough raw talent. The issue I have with this team is that they are so sloppy and terribly deficient in fundamentals. Gardy repeatedly touted the necessity of sound fundamentals. They’re getting worse by the game it seems. This is a clown show. It’s one thing to get beat by a better team but to give games and chances away due to incompetence is inexcusable. It’s like these guys have checked out.

I questioned the clubhouse last season - and thought it was possibly VMart poisoning the atmosphere.   I know there are posts out there that I felt that team and now this team needs a Gibby.  Someone to hold their teammates accountable.

Miggy's never been one to do that, Castellanos isn't in position to do that and in fact both of them may be part of the problem not the solution.  I don't know that they have that guy in the system but it's certainly the personality type I'd be looking for in any Greene/Boyd trade.

...and to add to my answer above.   Not only was this team projected as a 65-70 win team out of ST so pretty terrible then you subtract 80% of the projected starting pitching, the SS and 2B, and have the 1B moved to DH.   Also at this point time the starting C is on the DL and the starting 3B is in AAA.

So of their projected opening day lineup you have LF/RF and maybe CF and 1 starting pitching - this from a team already predicted to suck.   And yet people seem pissed that they're bad...........

Most of the injuries have not hurt them, because their replacements are just as good (bad).  However, I do agree that there is no reason to be surprised at their badness.  They are playing at their talent level.

When the Tigers were good they made plenty of mistakes, especially on the basepaths. Fans carped about it all the time. If this year's Tigers committed fewer boneheaded mistakes they might have one maybe two more wins. Big deal. What I can't stand is the severe lack of talent, which we all knew was going to be the case. Currently I watch to see if Miggy can regain his stroke and add to his career hitting totals and to see if Candelario, Stewart,  Norris, and Turnbull are long term answers. JaCoby Jones recent hot streak is also intriguing. Boyd starts are worth watching.  Everyone else are placeholders or worse. I don't care about wins and losses at this point. Better they lose really.

Gardenhire isn’t the manager I thought he’d be.

Gardenhire? He's the most irrelevant figure in this whole drama/tragedy.

In some instances the replacements may prove to be better (Turnbull over Ross, Jones if you count him over Mahtook) but overall you're right.

And I'm not offering a blanket excuse for the organization, just pointing out that what's happening is exactly as predicted.

This season isn't even close to the disappointment that 2008 was - when we thought they were going to tear the league up and score 1,000 runs - and they stunk while winning 74 games.

doesn't bother me that they are bad, only that they play the game badly. If you are bottom feeding for hitters that are not very good, you generally still have a choice between guys who can play the game intelligently but lack star talent and the pure hacks. Avila used to talk about trying to find the former but he seems to have come up with a lot of the latter. Letting Iglesias walk also rankles in this regard. Of course it hasn't helped that he could not move Nick, who has been a major focus of the sloppy play. The other axis this week is pitchers not holding runners. You don't need to be Cy Young to do that. That is a fail on the mound, at catcher, at first and in the clubhouse so again, it's more than having guys with high ERAs and low batting avgs losing games.
