Greene / Boyd Trade Options

lol, fire Avila.

If he had kept Greene 50% would want to fire him, now the other 50% will want to fire him for making the trade.

It was originally reported the Tigers received the 2 players the Giants received. I like  Wentz alot. Demeritte will be AAA fodder.

Fenech article today will provide plenty of fodder for the Avila haters.

MLB front offices expose Detroit Tigers' trade deadline mistakes

His hindsight is marvelous.

My laugh is at a couple of his "points"

Quote

Still, trade offers leaked out: Budding superstar Gleyber Torres from the Yankees, according to the New York Post. Other requests included two of a team’s top three prospects and even four in some cases, according to multiple persons with knowledge of the talks. Those starting points discouraged negotiations rather than promoting them.

So Fenech believes that in negotiations it's best to start with a low asking price and then work your way up?

Then he mentions these trades as evidence the Tigers suck at trading:

Quote

In the final four days before the deadline, three accomplished starting pitchers — right-handers Trevor Bauer, Zack Greinke and Marcus Stroman — were traded.

.........without mentioning the return for all of them was rather underwhelming.   Had the Tigers traded for any of those packages fans would have been screaming about giving Boyd away.

And buried in the middle is this:

Quote

Avila isn’t wrong: The Tigers’ trade efforts have been sabotaged recently by a near-industrywide shift in philosophy in regards to the value of prospects and team-controlled contracts, precisely when they went all-in on a rebuild. Suddenly, few teams — not even most contenders — are willing to give up high-ceiling (and cost-controlled in the long term) prospects for the short-term chance of an immediate playoff run.

So the trade market sucks, teams don't trade their best prospects anymore but I'm still going to whine that the Tigers didn't make a trade for "a haul" and someone's best prospects.

Had other teams been getting really nice packages I'd be more open to his arguments - but when no one was "scoring" it's hard to pin the blame on the methods of the Tiger's front office.

I really don't find fault in it.  I wish we had gotten laughably massive hauls from 3 teams for Castellanos, Greene and Boyd.  But anyone with sense knew that just wasn't going to happen.

Everyone knew Castellanos had minimal value, Fenech trying to blame Avila for destroying his trade value is laughable.  Casty did that by being a 2 month rental making $10M that can't field very well.

Greene had more value but teams didn't seem to want to pay much for relievers and based on history rightfully so.  Especially someone having a career year and probably due for regression.

Keeping Boyd barring a huge offer was probably the right move, hindsight will answer that in 5-7 years.

I get a chuckle over those that keep dredging up the supposed Fulmer offers that were turned down.  It reminds me of the people that for 25 years used the Smoltz trade as an example of not trading young pitching.  I'd still do the Smoltz deal, it gave us the 1987 finish which ranks as my 3rd favorite Tigers season behind '68 & '84.  The complete history of the Fulmer thing isn't written yet.  He may be a bust or he could still have a nice career.  I'm a bit of a skeptic if all of those people were really offered to the Tigers as a concrete proposal.  We may never really know that.

Avila handled the trade deadline correctly.

i think he got a decent return for castellanos.  the return on greene is ok, i guess.

we dont know what he turned down for boyd.  yes, i would rather have him keep boyd than take a lesser prospect package, but we dont know if a lesser prospect package was what was offered.

I'd say he did better than I expected for Castellanos, what I expected to slightly worse for Greene.

I doubt he got a offer that was favorable for Boyd.  I can't know that, of course.

I think he did OK on the deadline deals.  I also think we won't give a crap about  these deals a year from now.  However, he did pick up some players with a little upside that have some chance to help in the future.  That's about all you can expect from deals like this.

Seth Beer was arguably the centerpiece in the Greinke trade.  He's a LHH 1B/DH with zero speed and an apparent weakness against LH pitching.  Bukauskas is a great looking arm that is struggling against AA hitters and Rojas is a 25 year-old minor league IF.    That's not a great haul.

On the returns Al got....I think it was Fenech who attributed Demeritte's improvement at AAA this year to the "new baseballs"  Not sure how that would impact his sudden ability to draw walks...but OK...

BTW...in two games with Detroit, Demeritte has drawn four walks...maybe something has clicked.   Of course he got K'sd three times last night...so...maybe not.

If all demeritte can do is walk, strikeout, and occasionally slug, that’s a vast improvement over any young hitter they have on the roster.

Definitely, I'll take the walks and the occasional extra base hit.

He's got a nice arm for right field.  He's pretty well tooled up.  He's underrated.

I don't see how anyone can really be upset over the 2 trades.

The Tigers got rid of 2 average guys that were not in the future plans for a bunch of minor leaguers that will probably not contribute anything positive to the MLB club.

It's not like the Tigers traded future HOFers away.

Greene had a mini implosion giving up 3 runs and taking the loss today.    That means the Tigers won the trade right?

So far Nick is 8-20 with a home run.

Greene has pitched in 2 games, 2 innings, 4 ER, 7 hits and a BB

When Nick hits FA...let's offer him a deal.  He has to play 1B though...at least some of the time

I know many of you soured on Nick this year but I think he was just being passive aggressive because he was hurt Det didn't want him going forward. He said many times he wanted to stay. If he accepted 3/24 to play 1B I'd welcome him back.

But it looks like Demeritte can also play defense and run the bases.

Did you see him misplay the ball in right field his second game? Very Nick-like. He seems like a humble, hard working guy. I hope he succeeds

Yes, I saw that.  Pretty obvious blunder.  Keep in mind, this is only his second season in the outfield.  I wouldn't be surprised that there is still a bit of a learning curve for him out there.
