We're Number 30!

For quite a while, the Tigers managed to stay ahead of the woeful Miami Marlins in the run-scoring department.  But the Tigers' offensive ineptitude made it impossible for them to hold off the Marlins forever.  So the Tigers are now the team that has scored the fewest runs in the Majors, behind all 15 of the teams that regularly bat the pitcher instead of a Designated Hitter.

Not specifically too good.

The Tigers suck. They didn’t have this situation given to them, they earned it.

Quite frankly I'm surprised it took them this long.  I guess I underestimated the ineptitude of some other teams.

Something I heard today that might interest you. The Tigers don't have a hitter with more than 6 hr's. Currently there are 155 players with at least 7..

Yeah.  I thought I posted something like this a few days ago, but I guess I was just thinking about it.

The Tigers' home-run leaders are tied for 155th in the Majors.  Their RBI leader is tied for 113th (up from the 140s a few days ago, because of Cabrera's grand slam night).  Their Walk leader is tied for 59th.  And their leader in Runs Scored is in a tie for 57th, while their Batting Average champ is 42nd.

So probably no MVP or Triple Crown Tiger this year.

If we had a pitching staff constructed of players of the likes as Koufax, Drysdale and Perranoski and guys like Yastrzemski were winning batting titles hitting .301 this might not be quite as catastrophic. But since we’re not in that situation this is really bad.

When Daddy Warbucks owned the team the idea was to raise pitchers locally and to buy or trade for the bats globally. We’re still growing our own pitchers, but Mr. Burns isn’t opening the checkbook for bats. It’s going to be a long time before this team is competitive at this rate.

A couple of other correlating stats:

Tigers hitting .183 with RISP and 2 outs (MLB average is .241)

Tigers hitting .222 with RISP overall (MLB average is .260)

Tigers OPS with RISP overall is .618 (MLB average is .791)

Tigers have scored 4 or less in 79% of their games  (MLB average is 53 % of the time with 4 or less)

They are last in all of those key areas, and i am sure many others as well

Tigers hitting .228 with nobody on base (league average=.243)

Tigers OPS with nobody on base .676 (league average .739)

Why focus on RISP when they can't hit in any situation?

average wise they have come around a little - 15 points off league average after the horrible start is less terrible than I would have guessed. However a 15 point BA diff should match with a 45 point OPS differential to league average and the Tigers' is still 63 - so they are still lagging more in power than BA,  to absolutely no surprise.

Yes, but I recently read that the Tigers were among the top 5 for drop in attendance vs one year ago.

Maybe they are trying to steer patronage away from the Tigers and into their other clip joints?

I think that "cheap and controllable, with yearly hope for a wild card slot" is going to be all we dare expect. assuming that the "rebuild" is successful.

That was with bases empty.  Overall, their numbers are

.230/.249/.376 (average = .249/.321/.428)

So, maybe kp has a point.  They are horrible with the bases empty and atrocious with RISP.  If they could just be horrible at RISP, they could have a horrible offense instead of an atrocious one.

It’s not surprising that their average with runners in scoring position is lower than their overall average. The guys that can actually hit a little are the ones getting into scoring position, leaving the ones that can’t hit at all to be the ones trying to drive them in.

yeah - exactly. this is as it has to be with a short hitting lineup.

It's threads like this that make me miss Tigerlove -- assuming he didn't make the migration from the MLB boards?

Not many of us have made the trek.  I'm glad to have the ones that are here, including you, of course, but I miss the old gang.  Especially Tiggerbounce, but also some of the easy, slow-moving targets.

By the way, what are you . . . ,  uh, doing?
