Sam Thompson!  Those stats are inspiring!

Look at his at bats total and then look at his strikeout totals.   Today's Tigers have that amount of strikeouts in 10-12 games.

The Wikipedia story on him is incredible.

Quote

Thompson considered Detroit to be a mecca. He recalled his first time in 1885 viewing Woodward Avenue with Indianapolis teammate Mox McQuery. They gazed with "open-mouth amazement" at the "wondrous pavements", having never seen a street as "clean and smooth as a table."

A Wolverines teammate of Thompson’s was a pitcher named Lady Baldwin. In 1886 he led the league in wins with 42 but his 487 innings pitched was not the highest total.

Thompson’s teammate Mox McQuery, mentioned in the quote a couple posts above, became a police officer in Covington Kentucky after his playing days and was shot to death in the line of duty by two murderers on the lam.

Look at those stats, what a fine player that guy was.  And hitting 20 home runs in 1889 is pretty darned good.

Why was he called Lady Baldwin?  It's not what you're thinking.

His 166 RBI was a record until Ruth broke it.

With the team scuffling, I'm trying to divert my attention to other important topics: With Cheli's now closed, where do you guys buy your candy bars before the game?

Was that dude selling candy in Cheli's bathroom legit? And what's he doing now?

Of course in 1889 a lot of parks had no outfield stands and any fence might have been 500 feet way  so even if you hit it too low to get into the seats in a modern  ballpark, if it was hard enough, on a dry day if it split the OF  you might run a long time.

Because the guy who did the programs mis-spelled "Laddie"?

A leadoff triple!! Excellent start to the game.  An early run or two would be nice i don't think the Tigers have had the lead since last Sunday in Minny

Nice job by Lugo to drive Nike in.  Nice to see some good situational hitting there

Could this be a future gig for Candelerio?

Interesting stat, coming into the day, the Tigers first hitter of the game was hitting .154 with an OPS of .429.  Niko boosted that way up just now

I like to see the Tigers hitting in all situations.

A 2 run first, this is amazing.  The passed ball allows a run to score, sorta like yesterday when the Tigers scored their one run on a WP

So far Lugo hasn't seemed too intimidated.

A lead. I’d forgotten how that felt. It’s like a note passed hand-to-hand in class by a pretty girl and everyone knows you’re the target. It’s pretty cool.
