I'd like to give it a try.

From the Department of Winning Ballgames is Overrated:

Forbes: Detroit Tigers' value inches up to $1.3 billion

Get a load of this chart from the story:

That's right: since the Tigers were last in the postseason, estimated franchise value has doubled.

Winning ballgames is overrated.

True, although if you shift the timeframe by a year, it’s a bit different.

Did some external event in MLB occur between 2014-2015 account for a near doubling?

The team's been kind of flat since 2015... relatively speaking.

Could be as simple as a new National tv contract, but I think it might have been how bamtech became so lucrative.

And that was worth almost half a billion to just one team all by itself? Dayum.

December of '16, his signing was a Christmas present for the fans of the Tigers.

I thought of that but wasn't sure how a one time infusion of cash would inflate the value.  I checked a few other comparable teams and they showed a bump too.. not as large but signifigant.

I was looking at the timing of the national tv deals with Fox, TBS, and ESPN but those were pretty big before 2015.

Mlb advanced media, which is owned by the teams, spun off like 50% of bamtech in feb 2015 to Disney. Disney then bought a higher stake a couple years later. Mlb advanced media still owns 15% of bamtech. Given how much money is generated by streaming media and bamtech being the provider/backbone of so many of these streaming services, that’s a fairly large stream of consistent income for teams year after year. With that type of sustainable revenue stream, it’s no surprise that franchise values are so much.

The valuation increase therefore likely had a lot to do with Disney taking control and mlb retaining a stake.

Correct, it was a present for the fans.  But you have to remember that a signing of that magnitude takes years of planning and thus his value had already baked into the overall franchise value before the signing was officially completed.

Minneapolis right now. Blizzard warnings through 10 AM Friday morning, with a high of 39° forecast for Saturday and a nearly tropical 44° and partly cloudy for Sunday. Why didn’t they build a nice dome?

Dan Vogelbach homered last night, so the Tigers again trail him alone in HR count:

Vogelbach 6 (30 ABs)

Tigers 5 (423 ABs)

Doesn't look that bad.  Bunch of snowflakes.
