So, what's up with Miguelito?

Recommended Posts

This is like the third or fourth spring training game in a row that he  hasn't started. Is he already all-tuned-up or has he got physical issues?

Do you think it is normal to give a player who missed most of last season  an extended break so early in ST?

yes, especially when they are a first ballot hall of famer

The less he plays in meaningless games, the less chance he gets injured in meaningless games.  I doubt it takes him long to get ready.

So with that insight, do you believe Miggy will get more at bats this season as a DH, or as a first baseman?

I guess there is a lot to be said for trying to keep him injury-free until the trade deadline, assuming he performs well enough to even  be a trade candidate?

He said he wants to play first base and Gardenhire has affirmed that is what he will do.  He will DH occasionally but he will be in the field most of the time.

I believe that to be unpossible.

A lot of people felt that V-mart was the main barrier to putting Miggy in the DH slot.....I had my doubts then, suspecting that Miggy might object to such a plan. Of course I was derided as clueless for having such a suspicion, It's just the way of the net to belittle those who fail to share their vision. It's not so much that they disagree with you, they just need a platform to try and display that they "know stuff too".

I'll add to that, if he sincerely wants to play 1B,  after nearly a year riding the pine, a little "in-situ" fielding practice won't do him much harm. Which was why I asked in the first place.

I thought this thread was about Avisail. That’s a thread that would suck.

There is very little in the Detroit Sports Universe that bothers me more than Miggy playing first place.  Or Miggy trying to leg out a double or Miggy trying to score on a close play at the plate.  Basically, anything that significantly increases his risk of injury.  I always go back to the Big Papi comparison.  Ortiz had 600 plate appearances every year in his 30's except two.  As long as Miggy stubbornly refuses to go easy on his body, we will be lucky to get 500 from him.

You can get in more work not playing in a ST game, than playing.

It is irresponsible that Avila and Gardenhire don’t have a conversation with Cabrera that makes it clear that his primary role going forward will be that of DH. He can still have occasional starts at first but his service to the team comes first. I really don’t understand why the org is sitting on this. Cabrera stated he would do what the team wanted him to do. Other than the org not having the balls to have this conversation with him, has anything else changed?

Tyson Ross agrees.

the thing is that Ortiz is a not a good comp to Cabrera. Ortiz's glove was his sworn enemy from the day he made the big leagues, not the least of the reasons MN was so willing to let him go. David never cared to play the field.

Cabrera grew up as shortstop, outgrew that and went to the OF, back to 3rd and ultimately to 1st, but he has always seen himself as two way player, and as a matter of fact he is not a bad 1B at all. Asking Cabrera to be David Ortiz is possible, but it's a bigger ask than it ever was for Ortiz himself.

Plus the point stands that as long as Cabrera is going to swing hard and run the bases, he is far better protected from injury by dedication to his workout regimen than by DH'ing.

All that said, he will probably come around in his own time when playing 1st starts feeling harder so to me it's probably counter productive to push him on it all that much.

I have a feeling we're going to see him at DH more than they're admitting thus far.

I question the narrative that Dh'ing will help him stay healthier.  I think if he is going to get injured it's going to be swinging and/or running the bases.  In fact staying loose out in the field may actually help him vs. trying to stay loose in the dugout for the 95% of the game where he's not hitting.
