the game is stopped too much for penalties and reviews as it is.  the last thing they need is more officials and more reviews.

Yeah, but it’s going to happen one way or another. Just don’t let it be a system where a team on defense can throw the flag to look for holding when the offense converts a third down pass in the two minute drill.

when is the last time you've seen that done in the nfl?  or a playoff game?  where they made the call and then went back and reversed it after announcing it?

even saying it happens "rarely" is too much.

I don’t know, man. I don’t watch all the games. Can we just move past arguing about the correct term to use here? I’m happy to just concede this point to you. You win. It can be rare or highly uncommon or whatever you want it to be.

Can we at least agree that refs are permitted to conference and change a call?

I admit, I’m curious now how often it happens. Here are a couple instances where it happened to the Vikings this season.

and the lions this season, too.

it happened in the panthers-giants game this year, too.

So, whatever. It happens sometimes.

that's 4 out of about 3000 penalties.  seems like a regular occurrence to me.

Not to step into this minefield, but the head official actually announced the penalty before they huddled and changed it to not a penalty.  I don’t think that happens very often at all.  I feel safe saying it basically never happens.

Yes, I mentioned that in my post that kicked off this ridiculous argument.

I agree that announcing a penalty before the ref huddle, and then changing the penalty to a no call, basically never happens. I don’t think the error in announcing it before confirming it makes the call somehow worse than what we we saw in the NFC championship.
