Of these 21, there are plenty who backed him up publicly in this madness.   Only Mitt and Murkowski seem untainted.

“Never trust a politician who only comments off the record.” That came from a wise old reporter when I was much younger.

Unfortunately I can’t remember who it was now, since it was some standard newsroom banter at the time. Back when there were such things as newsrooms.

Interesting essay in the NYT by Beverly Gage describing how McCarthyism didn't die once McCarthy left the scene and how a line of inheritance from McCarthy directly to Trump is not hard to draw and thus that Trumpism is quite likely to survive Trump. It is enough of a basic instinct of the American Right that even when it's not in plain view, it will be percolating not too far below the surface.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/joseph-mccarthy-movement-trumpism/2020/12/04/d6e807ee-3460-11eb-b59c-adb7153d10c2_story.html

Quote

Though we now think of McCarthy as one of the most hated men in American politics, even in 1954 he retained a passionate base of support, with about a third of the public backing his anti-communist campaign. Once the Senate voted against him, the tale of how he had been victimized by a corrupt and self-interested Washington establishment helped fuel the far right’s grievance politics — and spark what would become the modern conservative movement. Far from bringing an end to McCarthyism, the 1954 Senate vote mainly pushed it out of Washington, and a new generation of right-wing activists took up his cause.

Something similar is likely to happen as Trump departs the Oval Office warning of elite conspiracies and rigged ballots, encouraging his base to see themselves as noble warriors against an illegitimate political order. While the Trump presidency will soon be over, the history of Trumpism is just beginning.

I'm shocked, shocked! that the self-described Working Class Party has zero interest in helping the working class.

Something that will make @ROMAD1's head explode: the terrible idea that, as a litmus test, conservatism is being defined by one's support for overturning the democratic elections process.

JVL is right on

1. Workers of the world, unite!

The Republican party is, as of this moment, an autocracy.

Consider: Why has the GOP gone crazy and insisted that the election was “stolen”?

The answer—the only answer—is: Because Donald Trump said so.

Or because the one and only president to have been elected that was not a part of the "club" was too close for comfort in winning another one and those in power (and come they ARE the power) decided it could not happen so made sure of it?  Trump is a bafoon and the thing that interest me a little is how EVERYONE on the left thinks that EVERYONE on the right is a "Trumper" and dumber than a box of rocks.

The absolutes that come out of the mouths of those on the left about those on the right is MUCH scarier than ANYTHING Trump ever did, IMO.  Their unfettering hate of ONE man and a small group of weirdos that leads to these absolutes is astounding to me.

so  here you state full out that he is a buffoon yourself and then you complain that others view his follows as  being dumb  for following a buffoon? I think you just contradicted your own logic.

*Whines about absolutes coming from the left while spewing absolutes himself*

Literally 90% of Republicans do not acknowledge Biden won. 108 members of congress are unwilling to acknowledge Biden won. 17 states are suing to overturn the elections. No it is not a small group.

"Bafoon" he is.  He is also completely lacking in ethics.   Those who support him also support that aspect.

The amount of wrong in that post is epic. 😂

Funny how no one ever questioned the integrity of the presidential vote until Donald Trump, and now all of a sudden, there couldn't possibly be any integrity in the presidential vote.

Funny that people could support a person with his extended track record of involvement with organized crime and pattern of double dealing, cheating and swindling all with a veneer of racism.

I couldn't even understand it.  I did see that "small group" thing, referring to 108 people in the house, representing tens of millions of Americans.  It is not a small group.  It might be on its way to being a majority.

He had made donations to the club in exchange for favors for years.  He was part of the club and still will be when he is not president.  Anyone who thinks he is some kind of victimized outsider is kidding themselves.

The throughline in Trumpism is victimhood....

It can never be that he just wasn't a very good President who did as little as possible to reach out to grow his base of support and, in many cases, alienated significantly important parts of the electorate (ie. suburban women, seniors).... it was that he was victimized and deprived the Presidency by nebulous "elites"

The victim mentality, frankly, is pretty weak tea

This isn’t a small group of weirdos. This is over 100 GOP representatives  trying to overturn a duly elected President. It’s undemocratic, and has no basis in reality. This is the Republican Party, and actions speak louder than words.
