October 2018 Game Threads

10 years ago Dion Phaneuf fought Todd Bertuzzi. Tonight, while it didn't quite escalate to "fight" level, Phaneuf gets into a skirmish with Todd's nephew.

By the way, that Leafs-Hawks game ended up 7-6 Leafs. Mason Crosby must have missed a PAT for the Hawks.

Wings are down to 4 D. Hronek takes a 2-minute minor and a misconduct. I'm assuming the other missing D is Daley who was shaken up earlier in the game.

Wings lose 4-2.  Larkin scored to make it 3-2 and the Wings had a couple of half-chances in the waning moments but a King ENG iced it.

With Daley out, the 6 defensemen tonight and their ages will be:

Danny DeKeyser - 28

Nick Jensen - 28

Libor Sulak - 24

Joe Hicketts - 22

Filip Hronek - 20

Dennis Cholowski - 20

With the same defense, apart from Daley instead of Hicketts, the Wings held the Kings to 25 SOG last night.

Bertuzzi gives the Wings the 1-0 lead midway through 1st. Rasmussen with an assist gets his first NHL point.

Good period for the Wings. Lead 1-0 after 1. In fact the Wings have played well in the 4 periods of this trip so far, despite the loss last night.

Wings hit the game's midpoint shutting out the Ducks on only 9 shots, with the Wings 3 for 3 on the PK.

But a minute later the Ducks tie it after a flurry.

You could see that one coming. Wings were out of steam - looked like they were skating through molasses.

Mantha needs to take the body instead of going for the poke check. That goal is on him.

Helm on the 2nd effort gives the Wings a 2-1 late in the 2nd. Assist to ... Jimmy Howard.

Ducks tie it with 11 minutes to go. Went to video review but upholding the goal was the right call.

Wings were really on the ropes the final minute of regulation but are headed to OT.

AA dekes himself out of more opportunities than any other player I've ever seen.

Entertaining overtime. AA twisted and spun and dipsy doodled until he tied himself in knots and fell to the ice. A couple more big saves by Howard. Nyquist waited too long as time was expiring. Shootout coming up.

"******* crappy ice"

--Frans Nielsen after the puck slid off of his stick in the shootout.

Ducks score the only goal of the shootout and win. The Ducks shootout goal is scored by a rookie and Osgood commented that it was a smart call because a goalie won't have a book on a rookie's moves yet. So of course the Wings send out Vanek, Nielsen (who doesn't even get a shot away) and Nyquist and get blanked.
