Red Wings Preseason

i was also surprised by how well i thought bertuzzi looked.

i havent watched the wings in a long time considering where i live so i expected him to be more of a big slug, but he looked alright.  general caveats apply being a preseason game and all.

im always more interested in my teams when theyre rebuilding than when theyre good.  its probably why ive hung with the lions for so long.  well, that and masochism.

I didn't see a whole lot of the game, but I thought Sulak looked super solid from what I did see.  He ended up with 2 assists and was named the first star.  On the game winning goal he stepped up on a Blackhawk (90% sure I remember it as Patty Kane but I could be wrong), rocked the guy as he tried to leave the zone, and then Giovanni Smith picked up the puck and dished to Svechnikov for the easy goal. He had another nice almost assist on a pass across the crease front but Holmstrom didn't connect.  Best of all, he has great hair.

I'm turning into a big lil Bert fan.  I remember watching the draft and being baffled when they took him at 58 overall: he was mostly ranked in the late 100's and even in the 200's in some rankings I saw.  He hadn't done a whole lot in juniors up to that point and seemed to be kind of a pest/goon.  He had only put up 22 points in 43 games in his second OHL season.

But ever since then he's done nothing but improve his game.  After he was drafted, he had some injury problems but put up 35 points in 29 games and played well in the playoffs and won the Memorial Cup.  Next season he went bonkers and put up 98 points in 68 games.  Definitely have to hand it to the scouts on this one, they saw something in his game that was waiting to click.  He won't ever be the most flashy guy, or the most skilled, but he just seems to have a knack to be in good areas and make smart plays, especially along the boards.  He got a good taste when the Griffins won the Calder Cup in 2017 and he was the Playoff MVP.  I think the Wings will be able to move him around the lineup depending on where he's needed, but he's sort of a fun slot in with Larkin - Mantha.

Hopefully the younger guys will make this season fun.

edit: forgot the best part, he's the extra pick that the Wings got from San Jose for moving down two spots in the first round, Wings still drafted Mantha who should have been their pick at their original spot anyways.

Like executing on the half-boards on the break-out, this is so important and so often overlooked.

Apparently Mike Green is battling some weird virus and is seeing a specialist... they don't expect him to be able to start the season.  Yikes.

It would be quite interesting if Sulak played his way into a NHL audition in his absence.

Big yikes:

there has been an increase in viral hepatitis (type A) running around MI (and other states as well) over the last year. That would fit the description of a virus attacking his liver.

Wings stayed undefeated by beating the Penguins yesterday, Rasmussen/AA/Daley with goals.  Veleno had a nice assist on the Daley goal.

Veleno has been assigned to Drummondville. He seemed to impress at camp. Not sure what more he can do in the Quebec league but I guess not much of a choice.

I think he could tread water in Detroit right now, and wish he could go to the AHL, but this isn't very surprising.

Not Red Wings, but did anyone see the Flyers reveal their new mascot yesterday: Gritty?

Not only does he look like the Philly Phanatic got trapped in a sewer with nothing but bath salts for three years, but his backstory is that he lives under their arena...  He has already threatened to kill the Penguins' mascot on Twitter, shot a fan in the back with a t-shirt gun at short range, fallen trying to walk on the ice, and generally just been ridiculous.

Nice mascot.

That said, I'm not spending hundreds of dollars to watch a mascot act like an idiot in person.

EDZO gave props to Hicketts and Sulak to close out the broadcast, otherwise sounded pretty depressed.  Success!

AA had 5 points I think?  Him and Vanek are a treat to watch together.
