Right.... nobody would ever get to say "Well, they lost 90 games in 2018...."

But it could also hurt the rebound... "3 years after losing 90 games the Tigers are going to the World Series"

That's kind of a big deal because 73-89 looks so much better than 72-90.

Although 72+90 is easier to add up for the math challenged.

I love how that profile of Billingham is basically nothing but his win total and winning percentage with just a small snippet of ERA at the end.  You would never see something like that nowadays.....atleast I hope you wouldn't.

Castellanos' D sucks.

It’s really quite remarkable how much he sucks.

What I like about that representation of the data is that it is very clear Jones can not cover for Castellanos, let alone Castellanos and Stewart.

This goes into my whole thing about how a player can never really “cover” for an inferior player that plays adjacent to them.

But, ignoring that, it is nice to see jones being able to go side to side well given the Comerica Park gaps.

Is that a counting stat or a rate stat?  Is it safe to assume with more playing time Jones would have more?

Nick's instincts are so bad.... I have a good view of the RF and he constantly steps back right on everything.  It's so bad that by the time I take my eye off the ball to see what the fielder is doing, he's still not got a good read on it.  Usually by the time I do that the player's already adjusted.

Magglio, to his credit, wouldn't move until he knew for sure where to go.  I can think of 3 times personally I've seen Nick burned by balls in front of him because he took too many steps back initially.  Maggs would have made sliding catches on those.

With Peaches being added to the broadcasts, I'm just holding out for Walt Terrell and Frank Tanana. What's Jeff Robinson up to?

Well, Wikipedia had my answer.

Robinson died on October 26, 2014 at the age of 52 after a "seven-week battle with undisclosed health issues." Prior to his death, he had been a pitching director, coach and instructor with the Olathe, Kansas-based Natural Baseball Academy.[1][5]

Really?  Is there going to be a return of "3 D's 3 keys"?

Yeah - it's not the Bad News Bears out there where there are fly balls directly to a RF that you want the CF to take.  Any ball in the air long enough for a CF to get to in left or right is an easy catch for anyone playing OF in the majors.

Same goes for ground balls a SS can get to.  Anything hit slow enough for a SS to field at 2B or 3B is an easy play for any major league INF.

Counting stat, so more time should translate to more extra catches, but it obviously is dependent on balls being hit to those spots.

Baltimore is now 60 games behind 1st place Boston and 25 games behind next-to-last Toronto. The 2003 Tigers ended 47 games behind 1st place Minnesota and 25 games behind next-to-last Cleveland.

Yeah Castellanos' reflexes are really bad which is why I thought 3b was the worst position for him.  I bet if he transferred to 2nd when he turned pro he wouldve ended up more valuable.

His defense would obviously suck there too but it would cover his arm better, would give him more time to react and would allow him to play a more valuable position.  -15 runs is more valuable at 2b than at 3b.
