In other words .. they've given Kirk a significant raise and added the title "Special Assistant to the GM" in order to justify it.

Oh, so that's why they won't sign a DH.

In addition to signing Gibson as a "Special Assistant to the GM" Front Office team ..the Tigers still have Al Kaline, Willie Horton, Alan Trammell, Jim Leyland, Dick Egan,  and Mike Russell also as Special Assistants to the GM.

Undoubtedly ..it is clearly a young man's job!!!

  • Al Kaline is only 84.
  • Dick Egan is only 81
  • Willie Horton is only 76
  • Jim Leyland is only 74
  • Alan Trammell is only 61
  • Kirk Gibson is only 61
  • Mike Russell ..the youngster ..is only 58.

Maybe this suggests that the Tiger rebuild could be quicker than expected?

Or that the Tigers are taking care of their own in a dignified way?   The older guys contribute their wisdom and are kept very comfortable.   I'm hoping they quietly do the same thing for some lesser known players.

Oh yes ..indeed!

Gotta take care of Jim Leyland!

I wonder if they could pry Enos Cabell away from the Astros?

I'm sure that they pay a handsome salary to Deuce for, you know, "protection."

I'm sorry you never made the Show man, but we still love you here.

I couldn’t help but chuckle at the idea that this Gibson thing would present a conflict of interest, as if the broadcasters aren’t already effectively employees and mouthpieces for the team.

Yeah, they're never held out as neutral journalists.

You should have heard Sean McDonough back in the day.

Every organization does this. Why are you all upset about it?

It's a way to take care of guys who meant a lot to your program, and they don't have to travel everyday like a coach. And why wouldn't you want to world of experience input?

I don't think you can ever get too many experienced eyes providing feedback about prospects, which sounds like most of what the job is.

That's all it is. It also helps keep the guys connected to the organization, and they get to stay involved in baseball. It's really a win-win for everybody.

It's not a win-win for those who don't get hired. Lou, Lolich, Freehan, Stanley? They're not winners here. Darrell Evans?

We're also not sure if any of them turned down the offer.

Assuming everyone already knows Bill Freehan is in Hospice with Alzheimers.

I like Johnny Kane...he is goofy, but it feels genuine and I can roll with that.

Not a fan of Shepp, not really in anything.  Do not hate the guy, but not a fan at all.

Love when Gibby does color.

Not a huge fan when Jack does color, but he is better than Rod.

Mario was a great PbP guy IMO.

DD is a great radio guy.

And I really like how goofy/homery Jim is, he knows baseball and is having fun most of the time and I can roll with that also.

I was never a fan of Rod.

John Keating makes my teeth hurt, but hear he is a great guy...sorry I cannot roll with that.

In addition to Freehan being in hospice, I son't think Lolich would want the job part of the special assistant thing. He's just fine showing up at games, hanging out in the Tiger Club, hitting the buffet and telling his great Mickey stories. Plus he didn't end on the best terms with Ilitch, which I assume probably extends to the son.

Lou is a really quiet and private guy, so I wouldn't think he'd be the team ambassador type.

Does anyone know how Mickey Stanley's doing? Maybe they should bring him back.

When I heard the announcement of the Gibson appointment, it reminded me a bit of the 2003 Tigers when they named Trammell manager and Gibson bench coach, and all the commercials that ran promoting the Tigers that year featured the two of them and none of the then-current players such as Dean Palmer and Jeremy Bonderman and Da Meat. Knowing that the team was going to be terrible, the Tigers wanted to highlight the guys who'd made them winners once, to keep fans from losing interest in the team. It's not exactly like that today, since the rebuilding is more transparent and fans know more about what's happening in the system than we did then, but still, that's what this hire reminded me of.

I give Keating credit for being the just about the only guy at Fox who ever asks an intelligent question in a post game. Hearing Trevor Thompson ask one more athlete how he feels about something is just about more than I can bear anymore.
